I had a problem the other day I wish I saw this video sooner as it would have saved a lot of time. My 5th great grand fathers name was allouisis paul went by alois paul. They lived in ohio but had southern roots. Every other name in the census record I looked at was the right first name with different last name. So I put a southern accent to it. The census taker had written his name as Ellis Powell. All the other members of the family's first name was spelled right same birth years but last name Powell instead of paul.

I wish I'd seen this video when I was learning about probate records in AGS: Branching Out last year. Thank you, Crista Cowan. 😊

Learn to write in that style. I write English in cursive script. It’s a joy to write and really helps me to read the records.

Thanks, for all the tips Crista! I have some swedish letters... I think it's going to be a really long term challenge. (like you say, come back to it later)

This is an excellent video. I wish Ancestry had not changed the page for "Tips for Old Handwriting". Your examples of that page are what I am using. Thank you for giving a full example of how to dissect a word and I could not find any Wiki for Ancestry or Family History Wiki on the learning center. Has that been removed? Thanks again for this huge help about paleography.

Couldn't find the page on your video. I tried the link though, but it's not showing the same page as yours.
