It’s sad that this is even a debate. We are literally watching 1 person who is about to do something NEVER done before in the sport. And there’s still people trying to argue against what he’s accomplishing blaming the increased base size or limited number of throws to first or he doesn’t play defense. This is the problem with baseball in 2024 compared to the other major sports leagues (NFL, NBA). Rather than living in the moment you’re trying to live in the past (in which there is 0 precedent of this). Even when Ohtani was pitching people were like that’s cool but it’s been done before by Babe Ruth, which Ruth never did to the level of Ohtani. By most metrics, Lindor’s offensive numbers are modest. It’s good but not great. But let’s be honest in most years Lindor wouldn’t even be a top 3. Look at the numbers Betts put up last year and he got 0 first place votes and don’t tell me he didn’t play defense. Dude literally played every position they asked. I honestly think that WAR whether it is bWar or fWar has become a crutch to the sport. It’s almost like we forget the magic of why we watch the sport and just see a number now and spin it how it best fits our narrative. If for whatever reason Ohtani doesn’t win and gets 50/50, you’ll definitely see a lot of people lose trust in the sport and leave.

Why are we trying to do that now? Don't tell me it's because Ohtani is only a DH. Acuna was literally hurting his team playing defense, he had worse -dWAR than if he had just DH'd. I don't see anyone having the power/speed combo skillset other than possibly Acuna in reaching 50-50 level. The most hrs Acuna has ever hit is 41 in a season. Look at this fact...There have been only 2 players in MLB history that have hit 50 hrs and 50 steals BUT in separate seasons - Barry Bonds and Brady Anderson! To have at least 50hrs and 50 steals in 1 season is extremely difficult! @@TheGreyCrayon I am pretty sure joining a new team and having to deal with his former interpreter stealing his money and the media was trying to pin his gambling on Shohei. all those things kinda affected his game early on. Now that he had everything sorted out and is comfortable with his teammates and fans, he is back to just having fun on the field. Of course you still have those haters that don't believe any of the evidences that cleared Shohei and still accuse him of gambling. lol

Agreed. Ohtani is easily the MVP, but I think Ketel Marte is closer than Lindor is to the MVP despite missing some time to injury. He's had a great season.

@@TheGreyCrayon yeah, Marte was seriously contending with Ohtani before that injury. He was on quite a run. I’m excited to see how Marte finishes the season now that he looks al the way back after yesterdays performance. I cannot put a .268 hitter over Marte’s season this year. He’s been sitting at .300 all year. Batting average and obp are too important. He’s insane with the glove as well.

So people are actually saying they rather have Lindor with the season he's had on their team instead of Ohtani with the season he's had on their team? Okay, it's fine to be objectively wrong.

We are not trained dogs if you watch Ohtani he is faster than lindor. Ohtani hits harder than lindor. Ohtani is leading a team to a division title in a harder division. Ohtani. The truth if he played shot he would be a better shortstop than lindor. Lindor can get second or third leave it there.

The story is the same in both the NL and AL. Most years witt jr and lindor are mvp's, problem is judge and ohtani. My one argument for lindor over ohtani is ohtani is a DH this year, lindor plays the most important position, at an elite level. Contributing on both sides of the ball should matter in an mvp debate. Offensive contributions plus defensive runs saved is more valuable than pure offense.

HOT TAKE 🔥🔥🔥: That's why there should be two awards - Best Player and Most Valuable Player Award. Both players are more then deserving of an award and for different reasons. Making two awards like this gets rid of the dumb "you need to carry your team to the playoffs to be deserving an MVP" while not spitting in the face of players that actually helped carry their team into the playoffs. Plus, both awards doesn't necessarily have to be given every year, it can be MVP (no Best Player), Best Player (no MVP), or if it's really necessary, both.
