Thanks. Jesus himself was a great man of science. That's why he told folks to lay hands or invoke his name to drive out evil spirits instead of teaching them about viruses and bacteria or seizures. Without Jesus, we would never have figured out that boiling water sterilized it. Jesus was at least into sustainable fishing. He just used magic to multiply the couple fish he caught until everyone was full! Great thinking Jesus!

High quality production. Well presented invaluable information. Question: The non-biblical Book of Enoch was part of common knowledge and culture in the Second Temple period, were there any others?
@HJEvan

The first chart illustrates the problem with the N.T. canon. We have compositions after Jesus ascended, not compositions that Jesus has endorsed. I have been a Christian since a child, and the more I learn about the N.T. and study the N.T., the more convinced I am that some of its books are unlikely to be scripture.
@lisanloves

In your view, which books should be in the New Testament, if any?
@HJEvan
6 сағат бұрын
@lisanloves They should all remain in the NT, but we should hesitate at calling them scripture if by that we mean they are oracles of God. Paul, in his Epistle to the Romans writes that the oracles of God were (past tense) given to the Jews. Here we see that Paul doesn't classify his own epistles as oracles of God even though Paul, at the same time, does admit to having the spirit. This doesn't mean some NT writings are unimportant. No, they are all witnesses of early Christian belief, the issue is whether or not we have the audacity to place all of them in the 'oracles of God ' category. If we are incorrect about only one, then we run the risk of putting words in Gods mouth. Oh dear.

Thank you for your work Wes...when you did your research on names (e.g. John), did you use the original YOCHANON, YAHUDAH IYSHQIRYOT, KEPHA??
@WesHuff
4 ай бұрын
Yes, most of this research was done in Israel by Jewish scholars. That being said, the majority of this work for Jewish ossuaries where name data is taken, and particularly within the period of antiquity Jesus lived, are Hellenized. That is, they transliterate the names with the Greek alphabet or use nativized Greek alternatives such as Iakobos (Greek) for Iacob (Hebrew) or Maria (Greek) for Mariam (Hebrew). This just speaks to how saturated all of the ancient world was with Greek during this time.

With regard to the example from the Gospel of Thomas, the original Greek word used for "male" did not point to the actual gender, but to the male πνευ̃µα - which refers to the spirit as a way of wind/breath/breeze - kind of in the way that God breathed his spirit into Adam (Pneuma (πνεῦμα) is an ancient Greek word for "breath", and in a religious context for "spirit" or "soul".). So IMO it does not contradict the Bible but shows that Jesus basically said: Through the Holy Spirit, men and women are equals. Any thoughts on this?

The only version of the Gospel of Thomas that has Logion 114 is in Coptic. So that's a great point but you're making an argument from a language that it wasn't written in. The Coptic ϩⲟⲟⲩⲧ did point to the gender specifically. The other themes of proto-Gnostic and Platonic dualism found throughout Thomas are very clear that the female spirit is evil due to the creator Demi-urge who traps our spiritual selves in bodies that act as physical prisons.

The gospel: the good news is that you can be saved from hell. And here’s how to get saved the Bible makes it as clear as can be. “Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ and thou shalt be saved”, acts 16:31. Words from your mouth don’t even need to be accompanied, just believe on the Lord Jesus Christ and you are saved from hell, it’s this easy.

You can argue for your holy book, but you still have no god to show for it. How can an all powerful, all knowing god of the universe exist, and the only way to know anything about this god is through a book that he gave humanity during a time when the literacy rate was 8% at best. This book screams being thought up and written by myopic ancient people.

Brother, I can tell you haven't read the Bible because you wouldn't be asking those questions if you did. Do you think the Bible is just one book written entirely by like 1-3 dudes all in collaboration to fool the world? @@christiang4497I must of missed the part where he was asked to steelman anything? What this guy said is absolutely true. The Bible is a collection of books that by all accounts looks to be written by people with limited knowledge. A book written for and by people of the time period. Strange for a book that was inspired by an all knowing and powerful super being.
