This video took me a long long long time to make, purely as I spent some much time (and still do) thinking out this topic. It also to me still seems like a controversial/taboo topic so am willing to hear other thoughts and experiences! And of course, hope you enjoy it!!

One thing I've realized about contraception and many other things that ended up revolutionizing human health and lifestyle is that they always seem controversial at first. So very, very sad that Mr. Haeberlandt ended up taking his own life; his contributions were massive and he should have gotten the praise he deserved. Very much looking forward to the development of a male contraceptive!

So I think the big questions would be… does the male pill have life-extending and health benefits like castration has been shown to have? Are the effects reversible? How quickly can it take effect and how quickly can it be reversed? Does it have an effect on libido? If it does, that would limit its usefulness, although I could still see a place for it. Does it have any influence on the expression of male traits like muscularity or aggressiveness or hairy-ness, etc? If it does, that could restrict (or expand) its usefulness. I’m thinking about some of these questions, because even though it isn’t a hormone, and isn’t acting on a hormone receptor, it might still interact with the body’s hormonal state. I know I would proceed with caution, but a lot could be learned, and it could be useful, even if the outcome isn’t what is hoped/planned. Good luck on this research!

This topic is absolutely fascinating. The creation of new contraceptives, that are more effective, safer, and cheaper could be very beneficial to many people. I am especially hopeful for the creation of male bodied contraceptives.

I just recently read an article about the role of retinol in stem cell differentiation in hair follicles. Apparently the stem cells can be either hair follicle stem cells or skin stem cells, and they can de-differentiate to switch roles as needed, but it is dependent on retinol level, and presumably a retinol (aka vitamin A) receptor. If this is also involved in the pathway for spermatogenesis, then vitamin A probably has a role in a lot of stem cell differentiation. It was also involved in cancer cell development (not surprising due to its relationship with stem cell differentiation). But it seems like there is a whole lot left to learn in this area. It would be very interesting if research into this male pill also leads to better understanding of these stem cell processes throughout the body.
