I do about 4,000miles/year on my '83 Moto-Guzzi Lemans III, mostly in daily commute. It's a solid old bike with almost 50,000 miles on it. Triple Brembo brakes are fine in modern traffic.

100% agreed. I had an 85 Honda V45 Magna and loved it except for one thing... Those darn carbs. Anytime I let it sit over the winter etc it seemed like I needed a carb job and those are EXPENSIVE $1,500) to do and above my skill level. For that reason alone I sold it.

Love the Sabre, I was so tempted to pick a used up one back in college that seemed like a great deal but I just didn't have the money back then. I'd probably still have it if I would have bought it. My oldest bike now is my 2003 Vmax and it's been great but living in Calgary Alberta Canada the riding season is really short especially for something like that. My KLR gets most of the early and late season riding now

Definitely NOT a daily ride up here in Northern Ontario where I live end of story! LOL. I can ride maybe sometimes in Nov - Dec but that's very very skeptical! I'd say May-Oct where I live is the absolute BEST. I drive in 40's alot though so we used to that here and we wear next to what we'd wear when snow machine riding which is absolutely Long Johns and specifically my skiing kind which is Under Armor Level 3's -25 celcius ones. I'm definitely maintaining my bike thoroughly....I'm finding out as I go here! As I type I'm about to bleed the Hydraulic Clutch AGAIN second time in weeks after changing out the Slave Cylinder rebuild, now I'm gonna do a rebuild the Clutch Master and change the sight glass on both Brake and Clutch.

I rode my '79 Zuk GS 1000 back and forth to Center City Philly on the daily. Way easier than a bigger V-twin right up until it was hotwired and stolen. I got it back four days later.

Back in -64 to -66 I had a 1930 Harley as my daily ride except when snow or ice on the roads. Just normal maintenance. Would not do it today as brakes was lousy on vintage bikes.

Can one ride a classic bike?...yes of course, you can, but you need to keep up on maintenance making sure everything is operating up to par. Given our communication and information networks these days, parts & advice for older machines is readily available. I rode year-round in the Portland OR area for three years as sole transportation on my GS1000...the cold rain, snow, ice , all of it...The lowest temperature I powered thru was at seventeen degrees Fahrenheit !( -8C).

Apart from getting an old bike up to snuff and keeping it there, you probably should also be aware of any unavailable parts. Early electronic ignition modules can be one Achilles heel. Not because they’re unreliable, but if yours does go bad it could brick the bike unless you can convert it to a points-based setup. There might be cheap CDI knockoffs on eBay. Another variable is tires. Some old bikes came with atypical tire sizes and you might need to either source speciality tires or go with a size that’s just a little different from stock.

I have a 88 Magna and I feel like I could daily it if I wanted to. The issue is if something happens to it. Parts are usually made from un-obtainium.

I daily a 1979 BMW R65 throughout the year. Granted, most of it is to get to and from work which is some 10 minutes away so the cold and the rain don't get a proper chance to break me. Once you get used to a bit of suffering the worst part that remains is just the initial putting the cold helmet on. Oh, and the brakes on that thing are just horrible, and the boxer engine together with the stupidly designed front fender have a tendency to funnel all the water from the road towards your shins and down into your shoes, so you get dirty wet in no time. 3/10 would recommend to a friend.

I had one bike that the steering Bearings seized while I was driving it, luckily it was at a low speed on a KX 125 but it really freaked me out when it wouldn't turn. I kept it in my basement not outside but when I took the front end apart to replace the bearings I discovered the old bearings were dry.

How's the highway gearing on that 1100? I had an 82 virago that did not want to do 65+ on the freeway because of the lower gearing, and that's always kind of kept me off older bikes.

sure, when that was built, and when it was new, that's what you rode every day. Just all of the maintenance needs to be done, and most of these motorbikes need to rebuild on everything that's rubber, etc. and you're good to go go have fun.
