Lol it is complicated, he was just able to simplify it on talking points. Many people end up with dosing nightmares and uncontrolled spikes. But truthfully, key is just consistency, on water changes will control most of that, but many don't like to do that.

I’ve been at this since I was 7 years old. Grandfather gave me a 10 gallon tank for my birthday. So almost 50 years at this. For me it’s about filtration flow and dedication to cleaning. I invested in cleaning tools and a set schedule for my aquariums I currently have. 20, 75, 90, 180, and two 225 gallon tanks. I only speak for myself but I use canister filters for all my saltwater aquariums. I water change each aquarium every other week, on a rotating schedule since I have several lol and clean every filter once a month. My levels are always perfect. I also use a lot of live rock, a large team of cleaner shrimp and I oversized the canisters because the flow ratings are marketing hype. The ratings are based on zero pump height with no media basically setting the pump next to the aquarium and empty, how much water can the pump push. Setting a water pump under an aquarium (as almost all are except for custom setups) makes the pump work harder. Basic physics. All filtration media also make the pump work harder, further reducing flow of gallons per hour. With all that said, a properly sized canister, cleaned regularly, more than gets the job done. A lot of guys with KZitem channels show you that they clean their canister filters once every 3-6 months or longer. You have a beautiful setup by the way.

Nice alternative for reefing-I’ve been seriously considering running same sized reef using HOB filter (seachem tidal 110 packed with filter pad, bio media, carbon, gfo, zeolite), algae reactor (like your tunze), and no skimmer w/ weekly 10% water changes. Aesthetically not as clean as your setup but I do fear the inevitable prolonged power loss and anaerobic reaction in canisters, which would be avoided using HOB filter. Had a canister that wiped out a freshwater planted tank when it restarted after prolonged power loss and I wasn’t present to clean it out before power was restored. 1000 ways to skin a cat…

I’d imagine by hand using pre-bottles RO/DI water or he is still using an RO/DI system to create the water. I have a quarantine tank his salt will not dissolve as his H2O evaporates and when he does water changes it will pull saltwater from his tank and he tops off with salt water 🤷♀️ but I dunno - I’m just chilling, watching reef tank videos and 🍜 😂😅

Can u place links to the siporax and zeolite?. After spelling both correctly i found them on Amazon but still helpful to have links. What is the difference zeolite vs seachem matrix. I am new to the saltwater hobby but basically designed same system you did after much research and deciding which items i was willling to manage. I don't like sumps. I like canisters. So i added a surface skimmer and a prefilter. I have macroalgae in my display tank and will probably add an algae scrubber as my bioload increases and if nitrates and phosphates are trending up. THankful for your minimalistic and genius design.

What a stunning tank/aquascape. Eventually want to get into reefing as the next level of progression going from cold water, generic tropical, and now currently African Cichlids. Always found sumps to appear quite complex, especially with the amount of kit required, not to mention the cost of it all as well as buying a specific tank and cabinet that is sump-ready. If I can get results like that with a canister filter then that's a real eye opener as I have 90% of the kit already in theory.

This guy is playing with fire, please don’t do this. He didn’t mention his ato which with a standing wave (which he has) would not work. He said he has a dosing pump for his ato, but it would have to be timed. This could cause an over flow being that your evaporation rate will change when the season change. To dose anything you would need to put lines in the display, which could back syphon if you don’t have check valves on all the lines. A sump could be a 40 breeder (40 dollars at petco) a heater, and a return pump. Then you have room to expand, add equipment as you go, and no need to worry about water on your floor. If you are thinking about getting into saltwater, please do your research and talk to people. It’s a great hobby and can be a lot of fun if done right. The community is very friendly and most are willing to help.

The good thing with the sicce is that it is easy to open and clean. I find it just as easy as opening a prefilter. But if you want a good one, the ISTA or SERA pre filter is good as they have included taps that stop things from spilling when you open it. I would use that one over all others.

Do you do like a thorough cleaning of the inside walls and components every now and then to take care of coralline algea that can cause problems on your cannister filter? I had a hang on the back filter that I use to soak in white distilled vinegar and water to combat the problem which worked. I just bought a cannister to replace it and was wondering what you recommend when the corralline starts to appear?
@Mikeymikemike
3 жыл бұрын
When coralline algae appears it is best to keep your glass clean and it will stay off the glass and grow elsewhere. As for the pipes, I swap mine weekly and clean them in bleach so coralline wont grow. For your canister, it will be very similar. Just keep it cleaned :) otherwise a monthly bath in vinegar should keep your pipes nice and clean. Best wishes

Aside from squeezing out a sponge, what else is required for maintenance, resupply of media, and how often do you resupply and do indepth maintenance? I'm personally looking for a setup that is quieter than hang on back skimmers and filters that doesn't require to much manual work. Its for a tank I have my parents watching while I'm at college and squeezing a sponge every 3 days sounds like it may be underselling the "ease" of your method and setup.
@Mikeymikemike
3 жыл бұрын
every 3 days cleaning hte sponge on this setup results in a net nutrient export of -2ppm No3 daily. You could easily not clean it for 2 weeks and be ok. There are other things to clean but again, I dose N and P just to keep the tank happy. Unfortunatley there is no easy way. Even automatic filter rollers needs a watchful eye and they fail, will your parents know how to fix it? This for me has been the simplest method. I will do a special maintenance video for you.
@Firefenex1996
3 жыл бұрын
@@Mikeymikemike thanks for the quick reply! They've been doing an ok job with routine maintenance roughly every 2 weeks for about a year (water change, shake out a hang on back filter cartridge, dumping out hob protien skimmer skimate). My protien skimmer is noticeably loud when working properly and my tank is far from being the cleanest so I'm looking for alternative filtration that either runs really quiet and requires little effort aside from a 2 week water change or a setup that pushes the water changes to 3 weeks or a month just to "lighten the load" for my parents. I've seen a could videos debunking the canister filter myth and it seems like a decent option that doesn't break the bank, is potentially quieter, and less visible.

The media is a big factor as well. When you use the standard sponges and plastic media you wont have much anaerobic bacteria. So you wont have any bacteria breaking down nitrates. Only ammonia to nitrite and nitrite to nitrate. Swapping out the cheap media with better media like Seachem Matrix or Eheim Substrate pro will solve a lot as well.

Love to see a video which shows you don't need to spend a fortune on equipement to run a reef tank. Steady maintenance and aquarium knowledge is worth a lot. I am curious how much maintenace a canister filter needs. The little spunge looks to me if it will not take very small particles so I assume you will have some detritus build up in and underneath the filter media. How frequently do you maintain this?

I started with a CAN on my first tank setup. I made that decision after watching this and many other videos on running CAN's on reef tanks. Honestly this kind of setup is very niche, such as having that particular CAN with the heater integrated and doing all your piping in glass or acrylic. I ended up just being over whelmed with HOB equipment that would normally be down in the sump area. I am now planning on migrating my current tank to a larger one that actually uses a SUMP system. I honestly wish I had just went the SUMP route to begin with.

I use generic glass skimmer lily pipes and sicce tubing to connect them but the standard 16/22 tubing is fine.

Hello! I have a 75g soft corals tank with a Tunze skimmer. I’m thinking of getting rid of the skimmer and adding the Osae canister for a cleaner look in my tank. Are you still happy with yours?

I can’t believe what I’m seeing ! I subscribed to this channel based on this video now I have to do a bunch of research into this video and this set up I almost can’t believe what you just said… why is that tho ? There’s no way in hell I would ever call you a liar you’re not gonna put a video out to 200,000 people or whatever it is just to make a fool of yourself.. But how is it that this filter is doing such a good job I don’t understand how was your water so clean? I mean really you never did explain how your water is so clean technically you should have algae everywhere with this 1 filter …. I don’t get it ! I mean seriously what gives ? Could you please find a time to address these questions I mean if you would prefer I send you an email I could do that., This video has me completely flipped like I have lost my mind and I’ve watch this video six times before I made this comment, six you read that right.. there Hass to be something we don’t know because it’s beyond my understanding that a canister filter could be doing such a good job. I understand that your husbandry is on point…. Ty for taking the time to make this video

how often do you have to clean your canister filter?

12:27 Why is most of the biological filtration in the canister? The filter pads, carbon, gfo and zeolite are mostly mechanical or chemical filtration, but when it comes to nitrifying bacteria it's probably mostly in your rock and sand.

correct; it is hard to measure since i use matrix and siporax. Both of those medias are very efficient. the rock and sand is good too, but nowhere near as porous as these media types. It's hard to say but there may be more surface area in a tray of media than a tank full of rock.

@@Mikeymikemike Cool, looking forward to the video on your dosing strategy. It's interesting to use a canister filter, I'm planning on setting up a little 20gal tank, I might try to run it on a canister filter with the glass intakes, it looks much cleaner than an overflow box

Hello Mikeymikemike. Are you my idol to use a Canister Filter with a reef tank. I 'm from Thailand. I want to know about a light that you use with your tank. Thank you very much.

Does the strong current not hurt the corals? It seems the flow is crazy fast

It’s programmed to vary throughout the day with moments of slow and fast, it just happened to be in the fast mode in the video :)

Thank you for this video, im starting a 75 gallon saltwater tank. I went with a fluval f6. Should I remove all the sponges from the filter and fill it up with ceramic rings? I'm thinking in the future introduce some easy to keep corals nothing complicated? Thank you
@Mikeymikemike

Thanks, the fluval fx6 is a very big filter with big hoses. I hope cleaning it frequently will work for you. You should remove the sponges and replace it with a media that wont trap so much detritus. You can possibly create a DIY prefilter using a water filter housing, taps and some sponge inside. Twist to remove and clean. Otherwise, removing the sponge and making sure water is able to freely flow through it will work well enough.

@@Mikeymikemike thank you for that tip, so tap in the inlet hose before the filter,, with another filter with a sponge to collect detritus?
