I’m 10 months into this hobby from freshwater, run my 160 litre mixed reef on a canister, had such negative feed back from different people regarding canisters being Nitrate factory and how you have to always clean the filter, my nitrates are stable between 3-5 doesn’t change, I water change every 2 to 4 weeks and clean the filter once a month. And all the coral are doing amazing, mostley lps but have some Monti plates that are thriving , thankyou for this video so much info need more of these, you don’t have to have a sump to run a successful reef tank.

How is it there isn't more videos like this, absolutely fantastic. Detailed perfectly, great info for someone wanting to test out this method. There is just not enough basic beginner setups tutorials, documenting exactly what you need to put into your canister and how you need to run it. Well done

Great Video I'm about 7 months into my first saltwater tank and use a canister filter one thing I don't like about researching reef tanks is how 99% of the videos I see make people think they need all this high tech stuff

Very very true. And you just don’t need all the high tech.

i love rena, i still have about 10 of the rena brand filters, new and used still. I just gave a friend like 12 of them to downsize. I absolutely Love canister filters and have used many different brand with good results. My 12 gallon long now has a fluval 107 on it. It sounds corny but the Rena Filstar series will always hold a place in my heart as it was my first canister filter.

Nice video with a lot of info on using canister filters in general on saltwater aquariums but i just have 1 question other than cleaning them why would you even change or throw away your Ceramic Bio media.
@saltypops4276
2 ай бұрын
Hello. The ceramic media is very porous, which is a huge benefit. Over time those pores get clogged reducing its effectiveness. In addition, some manufacturers recommend it.

First time commenting in YT, at least on this decade lol, but had to do it. THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU for this golden info!! I already followed your AI lights settings/schedule but I had no idea that you run your systems with canisters. I'm your fan now! :) There aren't many videos if any on how to do it and I've been looking hard for this type of details but all I see it's just waves of criticism and people attempting to recruit canister users into the sump cult. I'm minimalistic and already experience the many good things using a canister brings like the ultra quietness. I currently run a 55 gallons mixed reef with a Sicce Whale which runs a bit more GPH than the Cascade 1500. One immediate question I'm having is what media to put inside as I'm currently experiencing a high spike in phosphates with a whooping 1.4ppm. I already tried some changes in the feeding, a phosguard bag and dosed RX phosphates which shocked my snails and urchin. Howeve, the ladder brought phosphates down 1.1ppm. Keep the great videos coming! Thanks again.

Use ROWA Phos. Hands down the best phosphate remover. Over add from what they recommend and change it after 4 weeks. Use a couple filter bags so you get good flow through it.

I have it in a baggie, I can see sediments coming out of it. I'll surround it with some floss to avoid particles in the water column. Do you rinse this thing prior adding to the canister? instructions say no, the "people" say yes. lol @@saltypops4276

I have run my 120 litre softie and leather coral tank with a canister filter for the last 3 years. I don't have a sump and I'm running it with a protein skimmer and cheap chinese lights. Corals are growing like crazy and fish are happy. People are complicating everything with some of their set up's.

Which filter can you recommend for a 25 gallon nano please
@saltypops4276
7 ай бұрын
The tank dimensions will come into play a bit, but would recommend Fluval 207 or similar GPH. The 207 pump is rated at 206 GPH, with actual around 100-120 depending on your setup.

Great Video, do you run a protien skimmer, if so what brand?
@saltypops4276

Hello. Yes I do run a protein skimmer. This 45 gallon tank has an Eshopps Nano intank skimmer because it came with it when I bought the tank used. However, every other tank I have uses Tunze intank skimmer. Tunze by far is my favorite. I also always undersized my skimmer. On my 110 I have a Tunze 9004. On my old 75 I had a Tunze 9001. I always use intank skimmers just to avoid the risk of failure and putting water on the floor.

Thank you very much for such wonderfull info. Im runing a canister filter in my 100l LPS tank and after fighting with dino, I got a big problem with high nitrats and algae - bubble and hair algae:( How can i get rid of it?
@saltypops4276
11 ай бұрын
Hello. For your nutrients, few suggestions: 1. When you clean your filter, it should be cleaned to a state where it looks brand new. If it doesn’t it wasn’t cleaned well enough. I scrub with a toothbrush and use frag tools to get into other spots. 2. Increase the amount of Purigen and ROWA Phos to pull as much out as possible. 3. Get a 16oz bottle of Microbe Lift Special Blend and add 120ml weekly until gone. Also get a 16oz bottle of Microbe lift Nite Out II and add 80ml at the same time you add special blend. Once special blend is done stop both. For hair algae. Remove as much as you can by hand as often as needed (daily if need be). Also increase your cleanup crew to eat it. 100 gallon tank should have a couple dozen blue leg and a couple dozen red leg hermits for regular maintenance, more for algae issues. Same for snails. Get 2-3 dozen Astraea turbo snails and a 4-5 Mexican turbo snails. Both of these snails love to eat hair algae set them right on the rock with hair algae on it. For bubble algae hand removal only. Emeralds will never keep up unless you get an army. Be very careful to not break the bubbles. If you can take the rock out for the removal that is best but in tank is fine too.
