SANTOSH SIVAN is one of the world’s most accomplished cinematographers and was awarded the Pierre Angénieux Tribute for his services to cinematography at the Cannes Film Festival 2024.
In this interview, we talk to him about his long career - helping to make more than 50 films as a cinematographer and a lesser number as a director himself. He made the film ‘The Terrorist’ which won widespread critical acclaim and opened the door for Indian films at the Sundance Film Festival in the US.
He talks about his working relationship with the great Indian auteur director Mani Ratnam and their work alongside musical maestro AR Rahman, the three form a particularly special trio of artists. Sivan is working on a film called ‘Zuni’ and awaiting music from Raman to complete.
Sivan talks about the passion for cinema in Cannes (with a short excerpt at the beginning and a Malayalam section later on).
He is the first Asian ever to win such an award and was feted in Cannes with two events - a masterclass and a formal ceremony presentation with India’s Ambassador to France, Jawed Ashraf, in attendance alongside Bollywood star Preity Zinta. We reported this on www.asianculturevulture.com in real time.
He spoke of his enduring inspiration - Kerala - and as a tiny bird with origins in the state, we asked him to speak a little in Malayalam.
And yes, ‘Santosh’ is a film that screened in the Un Certain Regard section of the Cannes Film Festival 2024. It is an Indian production (with a British Asian woman director Sandhya Suri) but has nothing to do with Sivan. You can find out more about that film by visiting the site.
Correction - apologies Confusion over Shaji N Karun's films at Cannes - The last Indian film to show at Cannes in Competition was his 'Swaham' in 1994 but the cinematographer was Hari Nair. Karun's 'Vanaprastham' played in the Un Certain Regard section at Cannes in 1999 - Sivan was the cinematographer for this, but as he says in the interview, he did not attend. (SR)
