Owen Pesnell depends though. Having a higher MP only helps when printing. The siii will be better for Astro photographers (to a degree) as while it may capture less stars, it will capture more light and thus have a cleaner image. I think It also has a 16bit sensor vs the 14bit canon sensor. So color performance in raw may be better. If you’re only posting on social media or other digital sites, the 45mp image will be pointless on the canon. Only if you’re printing will it have a real advantage in photos.

Bizarre. If all you need is 4k video, then 8.5 megapixels suffice. why even consider a 45MP camera? If you do need 8k video, then your alternatives are few and good luck with that. Engineering is always about tradeoffs. E.g. there's no way to say that the A7s3 is a "better camera" than an A7r4. They're fundamentally different, making different tradeoffs relative to what current technology permits. Clearly this is not intended to be an a7s3 competitor: its hardware is optimized to handle 45MP frames at a high frame rate. That's going to get hot. if that's not what you need, why pay for the extra hardware? Yes, yes. I'm sure everyone is still looking for that swiss army knife camera. but the demands of a peak-performing hi-res stills camera will always be different from what a video camera wants. Perhaps this is what Gerald is getting at in his review -- this is primarily a stills camera. but again, who would think otherwise?

I’m not sure I can compare the effectiveness of any review of any kind of product I’ve ever seen to Gerald here. This is mind blowing how he can not only test these very specific tools to their utmost far limits and yet compress and deliver the analysis in such a concise and understandable package. A++ As a note, I am a professional photographer that does almost zero video for work. These cameras were not marketed to me. I don’t need anything new, I’m happy with my DSLR, however I do feel Canon marketing and product highlights in these cameras are very confusing. How can they on one hand, deliver 99% of what people hated about the R yet shoot themselves in the foot by offering features that are somewhat unusable? That’s not typically their MO, I have always looked to canon for their reliability and durability. They should stop trying to be something they are not.

I am an owner of r7IV and it looks like R5 eats that camera for the breakfast. Now Sony released 12mp pure video camera that cannot shoot 6k and yet they try to compare video only camera to the hybrid wet dream camera with high mpx like a7rIV. I would praise sony if they made 20mp sensor in a7sIII. For video a7sIII is just a cinema camera in mirrorless camera body and everyone is clapping their hands as they put flip lcd, while my a7rIV has a backscreen that has less pixles than a price of a camera. @@blazeboy777 The R5 is more of a hybrid camera in which Canon threw the kitchen sink at. It's a stills camera and about 90% of this review is about video. I wached the whole video and hardly learned anything about the core functionality of these camera's. How does it perform taking pictures, landscapes, portraits or even action sports. What are the RAW files like compared to for instance the EOS mark IV. Is the image quality the same, improved or maybe worse? Has the dynamic range been improved for stills? How well does EF glass work? And so on... Although your review is done right and in depth, I feel it's not complete. I see all KZitem creaters going on and on about the video functionality of the R5 and R6, not about what is is like as a normal camera. It is first and foremost a stills camera. Video is a bonus. No matter what Canon has advertised, I am sure it doesn't say there's a video device in the box.

Yeah the more I see about this camera, the more it's just an EOS R that isn't really really limited, as opposed to the God camera that's 5 years ahead of it's time. If you actually strip it back to what most people will get from it, it's a 4k average camera with slightly awkward but ok high frame rate options. Which is fine, if that's what it said on the box. But it takes a lot of digging to find out what any of that actually means. Which I think is pretty bad of Canon tbh.
@chuiwyjustin

James Travis I disagree. I have the R5 and it’s an excellent camera which is more photo oriented than for video. It has a great balance of ergonomics, resolution and autofocus capability that puts it miles ahead of the EOS R, which was frankly a shit camera for any purpose. The R5’s video capabilities are pretty good for non-feature length purposes, and getting to shoot 8K is a bonus.
@jambononi

@@chuiwyjustin fair enough! I think the marketing really did rub me the wrong way though because (maybe because I'm insane and need to chill but also) as a pro videographer the R5 just looks like a massive red flag of 3 to 4 years of constant frustration on jobs. And yeah the photo side is awesome, the auto focus looks great and I've no doubt people will get good results. Just don't sell it to people who will get burned by a camera that will fail on a job because they recorded 60p for too long after taking photos or something. I think my point is, it might have been better not to have the features at all or a hard limit of 5 mins so no one messes up a shoot because of it. 🙃 anyway!

@@chuiwyjustin well the point is its marketed as a primarily a video camera. And the expectation, based on who buys hybrid cameras is that they function as expected. That's the point really. A high end hybrid camera works. This doesn't. The hq is fine if you're literally playing around with it for fun or randomly taking one or two clips a week, but who actually does that? A camera needs to be able to record for an hour, thats where most hybrid video sits, in weddings, events, and interviews. The point im making is youre saying that as if it's obvious, but its not. Unless you watch multiple videos and follow tech channels, you won't know that the camera will be an on set disaster. So its very frustrating and people seem to think its fine but its not. All the reviews seem to be from videographers. And they are discriminating against this camera by grabbing the video headlines and only vaguely talking about the stills side of these camera. When I shoot video I use a camera that's designed primarily for this function. I dont get why people expect 2 in 1 and then dont get want they want. This camera NEVER was a video production camera that's why Canon make the Cinema EOS cameras and its why Sony make Cinema cameras. I work for Panavision been testing cameras & lenses for over 30 years and I can tell you our clients would only ever use this camera or the Sony 7S III for short clips or inserts it would never be the main or even B camera. Armando makes the same mistake. In the interest of balance you defended the 12MP for stills on the 7S III yet slated Canon video. The R5 demonstrates that its low light abilities in stills given its a 45MP camera is really good and better than any previous Canon camera. Others are praising your vlog, but I think its NOT balanced and question the dynamic range test because accurately testing dynamic range needs laboratory testing with carefully calibrated equipment in a controlled environment.

From the pov of a canon user like me, did anyone really expect the successor to the 5d4 to be something that one could juryrig into a c500 replacement, at a fraction of the cost? As a 5d4 owner, i see this as an a significant upgrade on all fronts. But really, if you want a video camera, canon makes those. Perhaps not at the price point that you want. But to focus the review almost entirely on this aspect, i think, misses the point entirely.

The physics-defining overheating and the long cool-down time really seem to be a software limitation at this point. Especially considering the fact that cool-down time is not affected by ambient temp. Perhaps this should be considered as a "feature" for protecting Canon's pro cine cameras.

Gerald, could you do a video comparing colour science and skin tones between R5/6 and a7siii. The latter has some extremely reliable video functions but to me the colors, while improved, seem less pleasant. A lot of youtubers butcher the colors with poor colour grading, so it’s hard to say how the Sony stacks up to Canon colour science.

Since 4K60 external has no overheating, Doesn’t this make the R5 perfect for studio KZitem production considering it’s subject to compression once uploaded anyway?
@youuuuuuuuuuutube
4 жыл бұрын
It depends what you mean by "perfect", the 4k60 is using line skipping, so you don't get a very detailed 4k image. It should look pretty good once downscaled to 1440p though.
@mondotv4216
4 жыл бұрын
SwitchRich It really does depend what you shoot. For people and shallow depth of field it’s not that noticeable but for hard lines like buildings, cars etc and deep depth of field things then a line skipped image can look noticeably soft. You can also notice that lack of crispiness around eye glints, moire can be a problem etc.
@mondotv4216
4 жыл бұрын
SwitchRich Your confusing compression with bit depth and whether a camera line skips has nothing to do with either. A camera can line skip, have not the sharpest image, but if it’s 10 bit 422 and then you’re not going to see colour banding. If it’s highly compressed you might see artifacts on leaves rustling in the wind but actually you’ll see less problems than you’d see on a more detailed image using the same compression scheme. Unless we’re talking banding in stills which is caused by electronic rather than mechanical shutter.
@mondotv4216
4 жыл бұрын
SwitchRich That’s not compression. That’s 8 bit colour. The only time compression will affect that is if it’s crap compression (which is unlikely on most cameras these days) or if you push a grade far enough to see macroblocking. And once again, compression has zero to do with line skipping. Of course 8 bit colour is a form of compression (well not really - you’re just not recording data because it’s not available in an 8bit camera) but I assume by compression you are referring to bit rate and codec compression i.e. LongGOP or all I and data rate? These things have no bearing on colour gradients.
@mondotv4216
4 жыл бұрын
@SwitchRich Sorry - my original comment was about what images look worse with line skipping not compression. Go back and check. And smooth gradients would apply whether the image was line skipped or not. I never mentioned KZitem compression at all - and yes currently KZitem only supports 8 bit. If you want 10 bit use Vimeo. And once again - zero difference between a line skipped image and down converted image - both will suffer from gradient issues using KZitem compression if the conditions are right. I was always talking about onboard compression that cameras use and I stand by the fact that will not make one iota of difference to gradients. Unless we're talking about the A7S3 which actually has a choice of 8bit and 10bit but then why would you ever shoot 8bit?

Something I really don’t get is my “inferior” EOS R records 4k all day long at cycling events outdoors with ZERO overheating. Hmmmm
@airb1976
4 жыл бұрын
Its easy. The EOS R has no IBIS. Because of the IBIS system the heat cant dissipated equally to a fixed sensor. Plus the EOS R5/R6 have much higher data rates at higher fps. That results in much more heat
@synful02

And 4k on the R is cropped. Canon mentioned they cropped the image to prevent overheating.
@joshzaring
4 жыл бұрын
Anthony Tueros 1080p isnt cropped though... still reading 6k to make full hd. If I need wide angles.... I use wider lenses. My point is that it really isn’t inferior. It’s never overheated and a lot of times I only stop recording to reset the 30minute time restriction. Considering the data rate is 480mbps on my EOS R, as a working pro it’s more than enough. Still higher than most, if not all of the sonys. People seem to forget that all of these cameras are used professionally every day and the specs diminish in importance when you have other things to worry about, like deadlines. Having said that, just like all the other overheating hot mess cameras, I literally can’t add the R5 to my workflow because as-is it’s not reliable.
@joshzaring

Airb 19 If you look at Geralds chart, there are some modes that really shouldn’t be overheating. When I say “all day long” I mean there are times that I only stop recording so I can reset the 30 minute time restriction. The R has been really reliable, it just makes me wonder why the newer R5 doesn’t seem to be reliable enough to actually put to work.

Thank you for an excellent review. As an early adopter, I ordered my R5 on a 'wing and a prayer'; however still photography, and not video, is my artform. I am reassured by your opinion that, for a still photographer who already owns quality Canon glass (tick for both), this camera is a good choice. I have just charged the batteries, and will start exploring tomorrow. Looking forward to learning more from you in the future. Best wishes, Ian (Gold Coast, Australia).

So there are two possible explanations for Canons heat recovery times: 1. Canon has placed a software limitation on the recovery time to lower the operating time following a heat warning. 2. Canon has created a space time barrier surrounding the camera that prevents heat energy from leaving the dimensional planes in which the camera exists. Maybe it’s a mixture of the two.

Jay Sanchez hey Jay, yes I know. I agree with you on that. The problem is that the laws of physics are being defied through some mechanism which prevents cooling the camera externally with any real benefit. This camera seems to have the thermal characteristics of a Yeti cooler, rather than a 750g camera with how well it retains heat and resists cooling. Many have reported already that when the video “overheated” the camera is cool to the touch, and the fact that leaving the camera fully open, placing ice packs on it, make no difference means something weird is going on.

Maybe they insulated the camera so well from the outside heat that as a downside the heat inside is difficult to dissipate. Tony N. said that according to it’s test the overheating time doesn’t change so much when the camera is exposed to sunlight, meaning that probably is very sealed against heat.

@@michaelbell75 This is true. Canon glass is cheaper and better than Sony's, more models, faster and with IS. This is all true. BUT. Their cameras suck for videos. I rather get a Sony A7S III with a basic cheap zoom, and then use a passive EF adapter to use my (many) Canon lenses. I prefer that option than having to deal with Canon's crippled video. And I don't even mean overheating. There are way too many little problems with video mode, very few options too. The Sony has the software and option availability ready for us videographers. It's just missing the lenses.

nacho dure sorry but you need to do some research. Start with the F Stoppers test where only ONE of the top 8 Sony lenses could even resolve 47 megapixels on the 61 megapixel a7RIV. The others couldnt even come close. Sony lenses are a joke compared to RF glass.
@EugeniaLoli
4 жыл бұрын
@@michaelbell75 I personally do not care one iota about resolving power of lenses. I shoot music videos and narrative films, so relative softness is what I'm actually after. It would save me from using a softening filter on set. That's why the bulk of my shoots is with vintage lenses anyway. From the modern lenses, when I need them for run & gun, I only care about AF/aperture speed and IS. If they have to sacrifice quality to get me those, I'm very much good with it. Resolving power is more important in photography, or corporate/product videography. I don't take such jobs.
So, the R6 is an upgrade over the R...but the 4K 120 ain’t great? The 4K 24 is fine?
