Hike Notes
Canyonlands Needles District is great for backpacking. For this reason it is difficult to get permits. My original intention was to book a backpacking trip of several days. I could only manage to get three overnight trips. The Lost Canyon loop with the Peekaboo trail extension was the first. A great introduction to the Needles District as it combines many of the landscape features of the park. Beautiful hike. I truly enjoyed my time out there!
Weather was perfect and water plentiful for Canyonlands standards. Relatively little traffic on the trails and I got the LC1 campsite all for myself.
The hike was never really difficult or problematic. Trails are well maintained and greatly marked. Although, despite the relatively small elevation gain, Canyonlands backpacking should not be underestimated in regard to effort as it entails substantial slick rock hiking (ups and downs) and sandy canyon bottoms. This is to say it is not necessarily fast hiking.
Really Loved this hike. Canyonlands Needles District is a gem.
