Hi, so I had to use my obd 2 code scanner on my 2008 Chevy Tahoe to read codes and once I was done I could not start the car. I fixed the problem by hard resetting the car ECM.
Thank you very much for taking the time to post this. This Know-How got me out of a real pickle yesterday! All I wanted was to continue listening to the Euro soccer news while I was using my scanner. The engine was off but the ignition was on, and then it happened, I bricked my Murano. On top of that a weather storm was on it's way! I called triple A and the guy could not start it either , then he told me (rudely) he wouldn't be able to tow the car because it was parked to close to other vehicles. I found your video on my cell and tried this fix, actually i found just touching the negative lead on the battery began to bring the car back to life. I noticed the door lights came back on, then my side lights. I continued to remove the lead with my wrench but in the end I didn't need to. I think the constant touching of the negative lead with the steel wrench was grounding the battery? Guy's please let your thoughts on this. Anyway the car came back to life and I learnt a lesson there. You saved me a lot of trouble and money and if you are ever in Brooklyn I'll by you a beer!

Well, you saved my Sunday. Changed out the MAP sensor and 2013 Jetta ran fine. Cleared the error with the OBD tool and the car would turn on and stall out immediately. After being pissed for a while at the tool, I jumped on YT and yours was the first I watched. You explained it issue and how to fix perfectly. Thanks!

I have to say a thank you as well! Same thing happened to my car 2019 Pathfinder it didn't want to lock the car nor start it using the push start. Only way i was able to start the car was bypassing it holding the key fob next to the start button so next thing I took it in to the dealership they replaced the batteries on the key fob thinking that was the issue but it still didn't want to lock or start the car! They told me i had to bring the car in next day so i got home and just found your video and guess what everything works! Big thx! Hopefully other people find this video if they have the same problem.

It worked for me! Thank you for sharing this! I did have to also charge mine, but it had been sitting for a couple days after I had cleared the codes.

Thank you thank you thank you so much. I used poor and cheap OBD2 to diagnose and remove the check engine code and once used it, it made my car go into a panic attack and gave me more errors some car functions couldn’t work like the cruise and the parking brake and others. I used your advice and removed the negative pin for one minute and returned back… start the engine and walla! everything returned to normal and work right. So thank you so much for this video

This solved my problem! I plugged a WiFi OBD scanner into my Subaru car and tried to read the codes. After doing that, the check engine light came on and the car would start, and then the engine just stalled out. After disconnecting the battery problem was solved.

Helpful! It happened to my car twice in the last one week. I just leave the key at START and won't stop. It then starts after 6-10 seconds.

I had this issue today and just removing the negative terminal for a minute resolved it. Try that first!

Take both terminals off the battery negative first and then positive. With the terminals DISCONNECTED touch the ends together. The residual power left in the vehicle will send a surge to the On board computer system triggering a “factor reset”. I would not recommend this for a fancy car
@TheCornishGingerOfficial

If you're shorting the terminals you're just using up any residue power from capacitors on the circuit boards nothing fancy

I had a similar issue after I cleared the codes on my 2002 Pontiac Grand Prix it started then stalled and noticed it deleted the chip key in my PK3 system so I had to do a relearn. Because of that I’m looking into doing a permanent bypass so I never have to worry about it again.👍

Don't leave your obd scanner on too long. They draw a lot of current and your battery could go dead. If you are learning how to use it, do it for a few mins. at a time. Good luck

I thought it might be because of this. I have a Bluetooth odb2 connector and I leave it plugged in. After a few weeks my car will refuse to start. Usually unplugging the battery will help. VW Jetta mk4 2.0. at least I'm not alone in the world. I won't be leaving it plugged in any more

I just had this happen, turns out the obd discharged all the juices from the battery, so relay wont let it start, every time I turned the key car started clicking but didn't start up. Finally I recharged the battery and it started just fine. So I guess first thing to try is disconnect the battery for a minute, if it still doesn't start up the car you'll need to jump start the car, or leave it and recharge the battery at home or buy a new charged battery.

What actually happens when you cross the terminals? Does it drain off capacitors in ecu?

it should be clarified, you don't put the terminals on the battery backwards to reset things. you disconnect the terminals and touch the positive and negative terminals together away from the battery. then you reconnect it properly to the battery.

This just happened to me, I got an engine fault warning on my dash (2013 ford escape) and the car wouldn’t start. Then after unplugging the reader the car started but said 4WD was turned off (I can’t control that ford has “intelligent 4WD) and all the other lights that appear when you start the car remained on. I turned it off again let it sit and restarted it and it was fine. It did return a P2610 code (ECM/PCM internal engine OFF timer performance) on the reader. But I think leaving it in when I started the car was the problem because this has never happened to me before.

This is helpful BUT Battery terminals are ON a battery. Cross over the positive and negative cables to their opposites is clearly better. My resolve was to jump start with a mobile unit. Experienced the click click without any turn over whatsoever. Now my new OBDII reader is like kryptonite...lol...smh
