When Carl died, that's when the divisions really started. There were some divisions before, Carl even had a solo career at one point, but those divisions weren't lasting like they are now. He was the glue.

Carl was the glue that kept the band together even when egos clashed and Brian faded out. Without him, so far as I'm concerned, the Beach Boys ceased to exist, and I really don't care the entity legally allowed to call itself the Beach Boys (Mike Love and Bruce Johnston's still-warm corpse) to be anything other than a novelty act and cover band.

I'm just reading Mike Love's book recently released and it's been so interesting to hear his side of the history. He really has been given a bad name over the years, and no one in the band is perfect, but it's been great to learn just how caring and glue-like Carl Wilson was to the whole band's journey. He (and all the Wilson brothers + Mike and Al and I suppose Bruce) were all necessary components to make the band what it was and remains to be.

I've been a singer, pianist and musician for 27 years.. Ever since I was about 11 years old I've been able to learn to play new songs just by listening to them. I can take entire songs apart - instrument by instrument, note by note and put them back together in my own way. As a singer - if I'm performing with others I can hear a bad note or a bad dream rhythm instantly lol. It's hard not to look at the person 😂

I cry every time I watch this. You can hear how rough his once sweet speaking voice became. However I asked people if they would post video of him from 97. People said he looked bad. I saw him late summer 97 and although he sat for most of the songs he looked a little tired but sounded GREAT. He certainly didn't look bad at all. Had I known it was the last time I would see him I would've made an attempt to talk to him one more time.

I envy you that. I was a kindergartner when Dennis passed, and was simply too involved with art school when Carl passed. The gift of the internet is that I can indulge myself and learn about everything that I've always wanted to know more about. But only now I've gotten around to learning about The Beach Boys and the one I find myself most drawn to is Carl. In a way I feel a fraction guilty and a fraction ashamed in that I do remember hearing on the news when Carl passed but I gave it no further thought beyond, "Oh, I did like my sister's Beach Boys tape. Sad to hear but old guys do die." I didn't know any of the Boys' names back then, and didn't bother remembering which Boy passed then. Now after much reading I know he wasn't really that old (in fact, only a year older than my own father), and that he was a wonderful person. And I just want to bash my head over ever having that stupid thought.

Kelly I would strongly recommend buying the Knebworth DVD. It's without a doubt one of the finest performances with ALL 3 WILSON brothers. Also it had a few special moments like before the show begins Dennis is in front of the stage as he walks to go to the drums he leans over and kisses Brian on the back of the head. Another moment at the end of Surfer Girl Carl goes after Mike .One can only imagine what Mike said or did to get Carl that mad. Dennis had to restrain him. If you search on you tube and watch the concert divides in parts rather than the individual songs you can see all these special moments

Sad that he left us, but it was a tremendous lesson on the dangers of cigarette smoking. I watched my father smoking for the first twenty-odd years of my life, and I would bellyache and complain that he was eventually going to die of some smoking-related illness such as cancer or CPOD and what got him to quit was my brother-in-law telling my sister he had to quit or he would be in a coffin within a year. And he did. Cold turkey! No patch, no gum, just frigid cold turkey.
