Hagler had the best middleweight jaw of all time. Hagler had no really good fighters in his weight glass at that time. This fight is how Hagler Monzon would turn out. Haglers biggest competition came from lighter weight guys Hearns Leonard Duran Mugabi. I think Minter was giving him a hard time before Hagler butted him and Minter never got a rematch. Hagler never gets credit for fighting dirty but you see it in his earlier fights and Minter and antuefuermo. I believe Hagler beat Leonard even though he threw the fight by not cutting off the ring and pitty patting his punches. He was promised a rematch but Leonard conned him and had no intentions of fighting him again.

The referee has even no shame in showing that he favoring Monzon. At least, for example, when Pacquiao fought Horn in Australia, he can and was still allowed to fight his way of fighting. But that's not the case here. Plus, I don't see what you are claiming that the commentators are trying to demean Monzon's performance. Monzon was rocked, but he came out of it well, and didn't go down, punching back too, and then he rocked Briscoe time and time again. Manuel Di, Don’t forget you’re talking about an older Robinson who beat all those men you listed in the rematch. He continuously regained his titles. The only man to lay a claim to the middleweight championship 5 separate times. He was a master boxer and probably the greatest adjuster in the history of the sport with his first lopsided loss in a rematch happening against Gene Fullmer for the middleweight championship in 1961 at the age of 40. Paul Pender edged him out two times, he split 2 fights with Basilio, knocked out Fullmer with one punch, lost a controversial decision for the lineal championship against Tiger Jones, lost to Maxim from heat exhaustion in a fight he was ahead on on all three judges cards, knocked out Randy Turpin and had gone 128-1-2 avenging every blemish before that.

Their first fight was in 1967!. He was the middleweight champion, in this, the second fight, and a fighter becomes better, after he gains the title.

Karl Krass. Monzon was a late bloomer. Quite Late actually,especially for the time period. His carear started in 1964 when he was 22 and he was a starved homeless bum(Argentina Barrio-Land aka-Ghetto) off the streets just a few months before turning pro,who was suddenly "fluke luck found" by a human angel(Argentinian version of Cus D'amato) and fed well for the first time in years,so it took time for his body and skills/abilities to develop. Monzon was still quite very green and a very young 25 in 1967. Kind of like George Foreman,in a way, when he fought a near retired Peralta in 1970 and barely won they're first fight,and even though Foreman at that time was a mere 21 it still is a good example to use when analyzing the development of future great boxers. But yeah,The Monzon between 67 and 70(When he won the title) are two very different specimens. The body and the skills/abilities can dramatically change between the ages of 25 and 28,allthough between 19 and 22,or 18 and 21, is usually where the difference is a more common thing amongst boxers when analyzing they're development.

Imagine Monzon against Hopkins, Hearns or Toney. The 1st two were taller than Monzon and Toney had a style that Monzon never faced. Monzon would have difficulties with those opponents. I feel that Monzon would have outpointed Hagler who was tougher than nails but could be out generaled (think Ray Leonard and Duran).

***** James Toney was good as middleweight but not great, could only hold the IBf for few defenses, he could never unify. In his day people criticized Monzon just like you just did. ''he's slow, he's open, etc.'' Monzon was actually the underdog in many of his big fights even against up and coming welterweights and middleweight contenders. Yet no one could beat him. Monzon had a major reach advantage over Toney & BHops. He also fought 15 rounds in a pace neither would be able to handle. There is a reason Monzon is the longest reigning undisputed middleweight champion in history and Toney never was, while BHops lost the title as soon as he was undisputed. As for Hearns, if he couldnt handle Haglers pressure no way in hell he could handle Monzons. Monzon was too big. Young prime Briscoe went toe to toe with Monzon and got whopped. An old senior citizen Briscoe gave prime Hagler hell and forced him to fight on his back foot in a close fight. Statistics don't lie kiddo. Only middleweight in history who is close or maybe better than Monzon is The Marvelous One
@robinsonray6766
***** 14 of BHops title wins at middleweight were of the IBF title, a paper title. The title didn't even exist when Monzon reigned. It has historically been the, if not one of the weakest titles. BHops did not fight anyone of note during those 14 ''title defenses''. Sad fact is BHopps was not the undisputed, or as some say lineal middleweight champion. Monzon is the longest reigning undisputed middleweight champion in boxing history. When BHops became undisputed and actually started fighting top middleweights was when he won the other titles from fighting Tito, a blown up welterweight. This is when BHops became lineal champion.He had a good reign, 7 succesful title defenses. We can compare him to GGG, Lamotta, Robinson at middleweight but not Monzon or Hagler. Reach is not the same as height. Toney was great p4p fighters, he rose the ranks and adapted well [well, got caught using steroids], but at middleweight his resume is lack luster. Before being world champion at local level, just like BHops, Monzon had taken some L's and draws. Fellow Argentinians had beat him, but when he became champion and fought international contenders he simply did not loose the belt [unlike BHops].
@robinsonray6766
***** I think Toney was too inactive to beat Monzon, and if Monzon decided to stay on the outside his long reach would earn him and easy decision vs Toney. Opinions are just opinions, but facts dont have Toney as one of the great middleweight champions. Monzon fought the best middleweights in the world, like today most were not American. Actually, just like today none of them were African American, the best afro-American of the day was Bennie Briscoe from philly, Monzon handled him in his own game. American champions mostly only fight in America, their hometown, Monzon had the right to do the same. Monzon was lineal champion and he never vacated a belt, if a fighter rose through the ranks and became #1 contender Monzon had no choice but to fight them, and he did. Comparing Toney to Monzon is disrespectful. Only other guy i respect comparing to Monzon is the Marvelous One, not even BHops. BHops considers Hagler the best middleweight ever, BHops knows his reign as lineal was short-lived. GGG is making some noise, in a few fights he will match BHops paper title defense record, and in a few more he will then be comparable to Monzon and Marvelous One in lineal title defenses.

Carlos Minion is a great middleweight champion and one of the top 3 middleweight of all time. The main difference, however, I see between he and hagler is versatility. Haglercould. do. more. things in the ring. on fact, Hagler may have been the most versatile fighter ever. not the greatest fighter ever (though I agree with Manny Stewart that he was the greatest middleweight ever), but the most versatile. he could box, punch, slug, lead, counter, brawl, or be a technician. he had an all time chin, great stamina, could fight on inside and outside, move forward and back, and fight on the road or at home. A prime Minion would have outpointed Hauler, pre Minter and post Hearts, but a prime hagler, a destruct and destroy hagler between the minter and hearts destruction, would have cleanly beaten monzon...and every other middleweight for that matter.

Not too sure where Monzon should be ranked in a list of all time great middleweights. A LOT of his record was padded with fights against tomato cans in South America. I have no doubt Hearns, Leonard and Hagler and Robinson would have beaten him easily, Hearns early and Hagler late by KO MM just had too much toughness for a middleweight who's strength was his biggest asset and, Marvin had a granite chin. Monzon's 14 defenses are impressive and stand on their own as testimony to his abilities but some of those defenses were against nobodies. I would say Hagler certainly fought tougher opposition. For the lesser middleweight lights, I can see Carlos cutting Antuofermo to ribbons, knocking out Michael Nunn and Julian Jackson (but what a fight that would be!) and winning a decision over Sergio Martinez. Then there's GGG. I really can't see Monzon defeating Gennady when Golovkin was in his prime. Too well schooled, tougher chin and Monzon did not fight well backing up. Duran was essentially done by the time he moved up to middleweight but it would have been an interesting fight.

Everyone, at Monzon's time, thought: "Monzón is not fast enough. I can beat him easily". And, without exemption, they lost. It is so easy to talk about something that never happened. Monzón looks slow, but somehow, nobody could defeat him.

An old Brisco did better against Hagler than a prime Brisco did against Monzon.

trvth1s I disagree regarding Briscoe vs Monzon. Briscoe in this bout was not in prime condition. He recently had hepatitis prior to the bout which undoubtedly effected his performance.

Luke Warm hepatitis does not go away, he had hepatitis even in the hagler fight and he was also a senior citizen on top of that.

Nowdays, they would have called that thing in the 9th round a knockdown, as the ropes caught Monzon on his way down.

Monzon was a great boxer, very resistant and powerful, a great cashier. But the average level of middleweight boxers grew a lot in the following decade. I don't think he would have been able to defeat Hearns taller than him and very fast, capable of unleashing four very powerful hooks in a second, nor much more Hagler who had a devastating power, much more powerful than all the opponents of Monzon, and was also an exceptional cashier. I think that Monzon would have had serious problems also with Duran who was as solid and powerful as he was. Three boxers all far stronger than all Monzon's opponents.

Tell me 5 160 pounds fighters in the 80's that beat easy to Briscoe , Valdez , Napoles , Griffith , Benvenutti

How can you reasonably, logically, reliably, credibly compare the boxers that Monzon met with boxers of the value of Hagler, Hearns, Leonard, Mougabi, Duran, Benitez and others? The best of Monzon's challengers, Valdez, wasn't even worth half of each of the aforementioned samples of the eighties.

The worst announcer ever! I used to watch Briscoe fight in Philly at the Arena and the Blue Horizon when Ibwas a kid. He was an amazing boxer.

Briscoe definitely won the first fight in Argentina. Knocked Monzon down. Ruled a draw. Lol. Briscoe hit Monzon with the hardest punches in this fight. Monzon won by points. Monzon would of not beat Marvelous Marvin Hagler. Hagler highest knockout rate ever as a middleweight 78%. Hagler never knocked down or knocked out. Monzon knocked down multiple times. He definitely didn't have the power for Hagler. Monzon 55% mediocre knockout rate. Who gets 9 draws. Come on man. Boxing is corrupt and he was a hero in Argentina. Sad considering he beat up women and murdered his wife. Smh

Monzon knocked down only once against one of the greatest punchers in boxing history (Rodrigo Valdez) and he recovered in seconds and Monzon wasn't in his prime anymore (he was 35 years old). Hagler was a good fighter but Monzon had better opposition (Hagler fought against fat lightweights and was beaten by one) and fought a lot more than Hagler (100 fights) so you can't compare the %
