In the 1970s I was being raised in an abusive, dysfunctional home (parents had split up, mother had custody of us kids. She was a mentally ill, abusive monster). As a result, I turned towards watching LOTS of tv as a way to provide myself with escape and comfort from my misery. The Carol Burnett show was one of many tv shows I watched regularly in daily syndicated reruns. It really helped me to preserve what few shreds of sanity I had as well as provided me with much needed happiness, laughter and joy in an otherwise joyless existence. The Carol Burnett show was the one and only tv show whose sketches had me and my sister literally rolling on the floor, clutching our sides with laughter (especially if the sketch had Tim Conway in it. He was the best). EXCEPT for these "The Family" sketches. When Eunice yelled and/or scrunched up her face in anger, she was the exact spitting image of our mother. It was just too painful. My sister and I would sit completely stone faced through these "Family" sketches. I don't recall them eliciting a single laugh from either one of us (not even the presence of Tim Conway helped).

A lot of things are a matter of perspective. If you'd been in a concentration camp, you probably wouldn't be able to appreciate jokes about how ridiculous Nazis are. Nevertheless, Nazis are EXTREMELY ridiculous, all the damage they did helped make them more ridiculous rather than less, and there may be some comfort to knowing that other people are in a position to laugh at them, even if you aren't. The same principle applies here. Bickerson-type characters aren't in the same league with Nazis, but they are still absurd. It may be that sketches like this even discourage people from becoming that way. Even if the people you can bully don't dare laugh at you, someone else is.

@hrpufnstuff1924 Too decent, too sensitive, yeah right. Yeah, she provided food (we were on welfare). She was required to by law. Not out of decency. On more than one occasion she told me to my face, "I wish you were never born" I cant recall my exact age when this happened. Maybe around 6-8 years old. My younger (over a year younger) sister and i were in the living room, watching tv. My sister was sitting on the floor and i was sitting on the couch. Out of the blue our mother walks into the room carrying two heaping plates of spinach. Nothing else. Just spinach. She lays the plates in front of us. Sister complained that she didnt want any spinach. Thats all it took to trigger my mothers inner psychotic. At that, she pounced on sister. Grabbed a fistful of sisters hair at the back of her head, pulled her head back, and with the other hand started scooping up the spinach with her fingers and slamming the spinach into sisters mouth while screaming at the top of her lungs, "EAT IIIIIIIIIIIT!!!!!!! EAT IIIIIIIIIT!!!!! EAT IIIIIIIIIIIIT!!!!!! I MADE IT NOW YOURE GOING TO EAT IIIIIIT!!!!! My poor sister. One minute shes watching tv, peacefully minding her own business. The next minute shes got this screaming, raving lunatic directly on top of her, physically assaulting her. Literally trying to shove spinach down her throat. I'm too sensitive?

The solemn ending is why I refer to this sketch as not a comedy sketch but a tragic sketch. Very few sketches on ‘The Carol Burnett Show’ end as such. I saw it as a teen--at noon, when it was shown in syndication and I wasn't in school. I was really surprised--and disturbed--by how dark the ending to this scene was. It's easy to laugh at some of it, but it isn't funny, not when you think about it. The characters are tragic, Eunice's dreams are shattered over and over and over, and family life is so toxic for everyone. (And it's scary to think that the characters are based on Carol Burnett's own family. Carol even loved playing Eunice because Eunice was based on her unhappy mother.) Re this scene, the way the light go out at the end, and we see her real despair as the scene ends...it's heartbreaking...and, yes, scary when you worry about making your own dreams come true.

Watching The Family as opposed to Mama's Family, you can't help but feel sorry for Eunice. As a child she was always made to feel inadequate to Ellen because Ellen was the pretty one, Then went on to marry a rich man. Her brother Phil left home, went to New York and became a successful writer. She got knocked up and forced into marrying Ed who ends up running off with another woman leaving her to be a single mother. Ellen and Phil rarely came to visit leaving Eunice to take care of Mama and deal with the constant criticism of how she was nothing but a failure in life and love and listening to Mama sing the praises of the children who does nothing for her.

Of course, Carol's TV program has been highly praised, but Carol wasn't praised, at first in the 1950s she was on a TV show with Buddy Hackett called "Stanley", which didn't do well at all and is very much forgotten ( she had to start on TV somewhere, before Garry Moore).

My least favorite Eunice sketch, a terrible idea. It's so obvious she's going to be gonged. What I'd love to have seen her do is fight it, though: once she saw it was going to happen, suddenly reach out and grab the gonger away while continuing to perform her number, fending them all off as they try to retrieve the gonger; once she finishes the number, she gongs herself and walks off with her head high: take that, Chuck Barris! If Eunice has to lose, at least let her lose once on her own terms.

A lot of stuff should be gonged today on tv … like about 97% of everything. Start with all those NCIS things, 911 crap, and keep going.
