I've had the pleasure of bringing a lot of Caroline Shaw's music to Belgium over the last couple years, both in my various concerts as a soloist or chamber musician (playing Entr'acte, Valencia, Plan & Elevation, & Thousandth Orange with various quartets), or through my chamber music festival in Namur, where I'd programmed a concert dedicated to this wonderful composer's works. But I hesitate at simply designating her as a composer, as she is much more than that - she's also a violinist, a singer, a writer, a free thinker, and probably much much more. She represents a new, fresh vision of music in the United States, that we have yet to encounter regularly on this side of the Atlantic.
In manus tuas is based on a 16th century motet by Thomas Tallis. While there are only a few slices of the piece that reflect exact harmonic changes in Tallis' setting, the motion (or lack of) is intended to capture the sensation of a single moment of hearing the motet in the particular and remarkable space of Christ Church in New Haven, Connecticut. In manus tuas was written in 2009 for cellist Hannah Collins, for a secular solo cello compline service held in the dark, candlelit nave.
