Let’s Create! Casabe is the Tainos Indian bread. I watched my grandmother prepare this yucca bread (casabe) when I was growing up in Puerto Rico.
The Tainos Indians lived in Puerto Rico, Dominican Republic, Haiti, Cuba and Jamaica. I will show you how very likely the casabe looked back then and certainly how it tasted. And I will cook it indoors!
In the early 1500s there were about 20k to 50k Tainos in PR. In less than a decade the number went down to 4,000. And by 1544 there were about 60 left. Around 1565 they were considered extinct. But part of their culture and DNA still with us today. And that includes the casabe.
Enjoy!
