Anaerobic digestion is counterintuitive for the chemical processes we are trying to achieve. We are trying to oxidize the ammonia, not strip oxygen away like what we get with anaerobic digestion. This creates a toxic environment for the fish, and the nutrients aren’t as bioavailable for any plants to absorb.

Floss should go on bottom

When you stack the filters the correct way to do this is to put the coarse filter media at the very bottom of the lower tray... On top of that you place the finer filter floss. Water goes to the bottom first, the it will work its way up the filter trays

Maybe look at this product from ikea? www.ikea.com/ie/en/products/indoor-gardening/indoor-growing-accessories/v%C3%A4xer-growing-media-pumice-stones-art-00317650/

I looked at that stuff, but I was told by a few fish keeping experts to find something bigger that will allow the water to soak in and remain there for a while. Smaller grains of pumice cant provide enough space inside them to promote the type of anaerobic bacteria Im seeking to grow.

I read about other people sticking poly fill in the outer rim of basket and their fish died ... idk if it’s good advice your giving maybe their fish died due to other unrelated issues but why are u so rough with your stuff

I dont think anyone can blame a death of a fish on how you add a bit extra floss to a filter...That would be like saying - "My friend put his fish into the fish tank while he was wearing shoes, so the shoes must have caused the fish to die" After therefore caused by = Post hoc ergo propter hoc

@@joshua7508 What I have heard about at the pet store over the years is that many people when they clean a filter will also take that moment to also change water...and they will do something there in the act of the water change that will kill the fish.

@@joshua7508 An example of how a normal water change can result in a fish kill- I live in the country and we are on what they call "rural water". A few years ago I did a normal water change and had a bunch of fish die. I did another water change and I made sure to be very careful with every step. Again more fish died? Only after I called the people in charge of our rural water did I find out that they had switched from the use of Chlorine to something new called "Chloramine". I had never heard of that stuff before, and I had never needed to add "anti-Chloramine" to my water before. So that is why a simple water change can end up with a fish kill.

I've had trouble with my last canister filters and was looking for a new one. Does anyone know if this filter has any problems with leaking? If the power was to shut off, would this filter leak? My last filters would leak when the power went out. Any help would be appreciated.

@@dashawnjacksonblitz and...Im home,,,finally! Ok, the filter will not leak. The clamp system they use if tight and it will keep things dry. I have not heard of anyone having a problem with running the filter on a timer, You have to just set up things correctly so that the water lines never lose their siphon and you will be fine.
