The collection of the Institute of Archeology and Ethnography in Novosibirsk contains a collection of cast icons originating from the Old Believer communities of the Tomsk region and Transbaikalia. The collectors of the collection are famous historians Elena Dergacheva-Skop and Firs Bolonev. Small icons, along with the cross, were constantly worn on the chest and were perceived as an important amulet. Large icons, often richly decorated with engravings and enamels, were an important shrine on a home shrine or in a temple. The favorite Siberian images, in addition to the Savior and the Mother of God, were Nikolai Ugodnik and St. George the Victorious, patrons of travelers, warriors and pioneers. Female patrons are Paraskeva Pyatnitsa, Kirik and Ulita.
Narrated by Irina Vladimirovna Salnikova, Candidate of Historical Sciences, senior researcher at the Institute of Archeology and Ethnography of the Siberian Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences, Novosibirsk. The video was prepared as part of the project “Important Things: Traditions and Life of Russian Migrants in Siberia,” implemented with the support of the Presidential Fund for Cultural Initiatives in 2023-2024.
