It took so long to go to e-ladle because the craneman was taking off the empty ladle. And there was NO forewarning - the problem, we suspect was in the gate itself, actually just ABOVE the gate, which was why it spewed out the sides - it was like putting the palm of your hand under a faucet without sealing it completely. Proceedure demands that you close the gate in an emergency, but if, somehow, someone had ESP, it would've been better to just leave the gate open and swing to the e-ladle.

Oh i thought the ladle washed out that must have been a fun mess to clean up and an expensive claim to the insurance company.

if it was the gate, i have never seen one fail that badly over a minute after open. seen them leak, seen them burned thru that you can't shut it off, but never failure like that after an open.

Amazingly enough, the only guy that was injured was the guy that jumped off the platform. You can catch it if you watch real close - he jumps off the right side well into the video.

Where was the caster in Mingo? I can’t remember, but my grandfather was a foreman in the bof from 1963 to 1999.

The caster is right next to the BOF. The steel goes right to the caster fron the BOF and is cast into slabs. I started there in 1996, so I probably knew him.

Mingo Junction, OH - At that time, I think it was Essmark Steel, then Wheeling Severstal, now RG Steel and shut down, probably for the count....

Frank you probably know this, but the caster will be coming back to life very soon, we have 6 of the molds/occilators in our shop right now, the first mold is ready to go out the door the second isn't but a few days behind. Soon enough the steel will flow.

You know about the caster gods?! I thought it was just us, at Wheeling-Pitt(now RG Steel and shut down). When they started up in '84(before my time), there were labor issues, and MODAC was one of the chief deities - Money Or Disaster At the Caster!

Holy shit, holy, holy shit, what a breakout. Christ! But why the hell did it take 3 minutes to spin the ladle off?? The music did NOT help. The first half of the video, I could feel my heart racing, just waiting for all hell to break lose. Not nice!

it was a ladle breakout, if you look at 3:03 - 3:05, you can see it breakout. i am impressed that you were running in 2 days. that ladlemans panel should have been a writeoff and even some strand panel damage. certainly longer than 2 days worth. i am guessing a few electricians got lots of OT. sometimes a shroud blowback can look just as scary. we had a tundish breakout on the backside of the dish, put us down for a week. filled the track up, burned up the wiring on the car and damaged some wiring under the floor. sometimes all you can do is hit the big red button and run away. most times for those that dont know, it can look bad, but rarely is, just lots of sparks, but a ladle BO, your screwed, because just spinning will damage things, esp if it has to go over a strand. again, the big red button.
