I spooled it with 8 LB test mono for lighter lures, gave it some practice casts and found that it did cast well kzitem.infoUgkxSlytCJqozTF7EbdP4LWP-HUXf9WRDJ0e , except that the anti-backlash setting had to be turned up almost all of the way to keep the "overcasts' ' down. I disassembled it, and found that if I potted some "shim washers" behind that anti-backlash magnet assembly, it got the magnets closer to the spool without rubbing, and I could get better control with about a 6 to 7 out out 10-Max setting. I also noticed that the handle shaft had some internal end play, maybe only 2 or 3 thousands of an inch, but it's still noticeable. If the anti-backlash and shaft tolerances were "tightened up" this would be a fantastic value. I've only used it for 4 days of fishing in a month's time, but I plan on keeping it.

@Olorinii That's the first thing I did when I got my first baitcaster! You Tube!! It had everything I needed and answered all my questions I was casting pretty good the first day. I've used spinning gear my whole life and for the most part still do. But when I need to get into some heavy stuff or big baits I go to the baitcaster!! Very Good Advice!!!

@@shani02056 I am doing pretty good. I can throw both bait casters and even learned to fly fish. I have been married for ten years now and I have two daughters age eight and five. I bought a house in 2012, completed my PhD in 2014, and got myself tenured. I am teaching from home this semester due the Covid-19. I just finished entering my spring semester grades and I'm having an end of semester beer.

when u cast u take ur finger off and then just apply light pressure with your thumb when it is falling so when it hits the water the spool is slowed down.

I had the same problem when I first started. One thing I was doing wrong was I didn't have the spool all the way full of line. Other than that just keep practicing and experimenting with the spool tension knob and the brakes until you find the right setting.

Hardest thing for me was learning not to try and throw the bait as hard as I can. You have to use a smooth back and then forward motion and let the rod do the work. Learning to keep your thumb lightly on the spool while the bait is in the air is surprisingly easy once you master casting.

@shootinshotguns hmmm, maybe u need a heavier lure, or u need to move the two knobs on the reel, tighten or loosen, but wen u release the pressure, the lure should very slowly come down by itself

It's because of the moons gravity, the same thing that causes tides. Turning it sideways neutralizes the effect of its gravity on the reel and the line. When you are fishing south of the equator, turn it the opposite direction.

all u bait caster fisher man help! im new to baitcasters and i have a question. it seems when ever i use a plastic my line doesnt rap around the reel very tight, which makes the line easer to dig into the spool because baitcasting reels have a horizontal spool, this never happens when im using a rapala or a spinner because there is always resistance on the line when retrieving so it stays nice and tight. help!!

the demonstrated "backlash" is actually refered to as over run.backlash occurs during the cast, not when the sinker/lure hits the water.backlash occurs because of poor technique or poor reel setting or both

This is an old comment, but for those interested, not only is "sideways" ergonomic with regard to the way your wrist bends, but especially in the days before spools were supported by ball bearings, the spool would spin much more freely in a position where most of the spool's weight was on the point of the left end of the spool shaft, rather than fully on the bushings as would be the case with the spool horizontal (this of course refers to the position of the spool at the end of the cast, when the line is flying off the reel, which is when you want friction to be at a minimum).

Need to learn to stop spool with your thumb as lure hits the water !! Even just before when getting the hang of it !!! And while learning over do your break control slightly as well !! It will kill your distance but forget that till you get used to it !!!

good instructional vid, but having watched that, all people who are taking up fishing, will assume that right-hand wind multi is the way to go-you did not show that yu had to change hands after casting with a right hand "American style" multiplier -so with this multiplier, you have your weaker left arm,doing the heavy work of pumping in fish, and your right arm, doing the piddly job of winding in-no logic to this and there never has been-most people 95% with fixed -spool reel wind in left hand
@CaneFu

a few basic flaws in his explanation 1/the knob on the side of that particular reel (a shimano Calcutta) is for spool tension,its not a backlash control strictly speaking,as that reel has centrifugal braking ie not externally adjustable2/he fails to mention a critical point,stop the spool with your thumb the moment the lure hits the water !!!!!
