Call me crazy but I prefer Dracula X over Castlevania IV :P For some reason, while I still think it's a great game, IV never really did the trick for me, and felt too easy when compared to other entries. Strategy isn't really needed, especially with special items, since your whip can do anything, imho. Still a great game but not ma favorite. I liked my time with X (very difficult last boss eh!), but Rondo of Blood being my absolute favorite castlevania game OAT, it's still a bit hard to not feel how lacking it is in comparison. But at the end of the day, ALL of those games are awesome and well worth your time! My personal list, from best to not as great, would be : 1 - RoB 2 - Bloodlines 3 - III 4 - I (such a classic! I could play it everyday. It holds a special place for me. The MSX version is also awesome.) 5 - Castlevania Chronicles (PSX remake of the OG 1) 6 - X 7 - IV 8 - II 9 - 1 or 2 GB titles and the Wii Ware remake 10 - HATED the RoB PSP remake. Knowing the game so well, it felt so... off. It's ugly as hell too imho, the timing is screwed, floaty feeling, etc. BUT, you can unlock the OG RoB, so I place it both last (for butchering one of my all time favorite game), and first for including the OG PC-Engine CD RoB as an unlockable) ;) So in a weird twist, I rank the game everyone called a washed down RoB version (with some merit), X, better than it's actual remake/reboot on the PSP. I know that my personal list will appear ridiculous to most, especially regarding IV, but it's really how I experienced these games, and how I feel about them right now. I'm also happy to see how Bloodlines finally got the respect it deserved in the past 10 years. I only played it as an adult and it blew me away, while IV felt kind of bland now, even with the HUGE nostalgia factor (I don't know the reason, but it didn't age as well for me as I thought it would, and I'm not 100% sure why).

@@Unholy_Louie I liked how Dracula X brought back the NES style of game play. SC4 was way too easy. No skill was needed for most of the bosses in that game. Just stand there and whip away and it will die before it can kill you.

@@ENiceGeo Exactly man. Lovely game, but it's not a Castlevania game if you can finish it during your first try as a small child... I find it cool that one of the 16bits games got a different whip mechanic, but hell, you need to account for it when it comes to level & boss design and difficulty in general. But Dracula X only brought back that style of gameplay when it comes to the SNES, for the Genesis/MD & PC Engine CD, they already got theirs, and are in my opinion vastly superior (especially RoB, obviously). Still, as a SNES owner you can't go wrong with either IV or X... Are they the best? Far from it imho, but still awesome games.

I remember grabbing this at a used game shop for $25...back when used SNES games went for under $10. Dracula X is a bloody brilliant SNES game, but if you've played the PC Engine version you can't help but wonder what could've been if Konami had designed it for a 24-Meg or 32-Meg cartridge rather than 16-Meg... That final Dracula fight on the uneven columns was BS, though.

I remember finishing it back in the day. What I actually remember is how complicated was to defeat Dracula second form, that looks like Devil Kazuya from Tekken franchise, to be honest. I ended up exploiting the back flip mechanic to finish him and then the game. Graphic wise it is absolutely gorgeous, but I see the main issues with Dracula X being the low framerate. It turns everything harder for not a good reason.

I still own my 1995 SNES cartridge, but I also own the PC Engine SCD game and bc I played the PCE version first, I was always lukewarm on the SNES game. PCE version is my fave CV game of all time, SNES version had cheap medusa heads, bats, ghosts, floating blue skulls, etc for like every platform jump and was annoying bc this was overused. Level design and branching paths to the PCE game made it a way better game. PCE can be a challenge too, but it just seemed more fair.

A solid entry IMO. I really liked the music in this one but prefer the controls from Super Castlevania IV. Ignoring where it came from with Rondo of Blood on PC-Engine for the moment, this game left me with a weird feeling when I was playing it on the SNES back in the day. In some ways it felt like a downgrade for the controls, but also an upgrade for removing the timer. Graphics were really good though and since the music was just as good as for Super Castlevania IV, that was a wash. So it's was kind of weird how it does some things really well but not others. Plus the difficulty spike was not very welcomed either. Sure, I like challenging platformers, but many parts of it felt like it was made crazy hard just for the sake of making it crazy hard. Like the final fight with Dracula. That's no joke one of the most difficult final bosses I ever fought in a platformer game to this day.

When you look at the Castlevania lore, Richter's era is a few generations after Simon's. Super Castlevania 4 is a reimagining of the first game, not a fully seperate entry when you look at the story. In other words, neither of the two SNES games are actually canon.

I still own an original cart and the PCE CD Rondo of Blood (as well as every other 2D Castlevania on console), and it is definitely underappreciated. I do prefer the more balanced difficulty of the PC Engine CD and its save system, but, having played them on side by side CRT TVs in my basement, I think that the SNES game both looks and sounds better. That said, I think people get too caught up in that comparison. As a game in its own right, it is excellent, and I prefer it over Castlevania 1 and 3, Bloodlines, any of the black amd white Game Boy games, Haunted Castle, Castlevania Chronicles, or Circle of the Moon. That's just a personal opinion from someone that grew up with the series, but also clearly favors the metroidvanias. I do prefer Super Castlevania IV and Rondo of Blood for its contemporaries, and all of the metroidvanias save Circle of the Moon. I like Simons's Quest better as well.

My vote for the hardest Castlevania game. I think it's even harder than Castlevania 3. I think the furthest I've ever gotten is Stage 3. This one just beats me by making me so frustrated I just give up. I remember a friend and I rented this one weekend and this game just destroyed us. The visuals and music are outstanding. I love the fire effects in Stage 1. Years later I finally got to play Rondo. I went into it thinking it was going to be as brutal as this game and was stunned at how much better and easier it was compared to this.

@@TheNameIsSR And again wrong…. First of all, do you understand the Japanese language to read old Japanese magazines for example? I have the feeling you just type informations, which you can find on internet , without really knowing the history of this game development and intentions of Yoshiaki Yamada. The majority mustn’t be always right…. just like you mustn’t always find correct informations on internet. *smile *😉 What I wrote is the perfect example for a stripped down version, but not a different game. ( Topic: programming) definition, what is a port, what is a spin off, what is a remake, what is a new game…..in general , I miss knowledge here. Don’t take it personally, please. Definition of different game : Zelda Majoras Mask / Zelda Ocarina of time for example…. As for the SNES Dracula X, it is loosely based on Rondo of blood, with almost the same story…. And even the tiny differences are the reasons for the discrepancies between the Japanese and western language understanding, using the same template of game design. ( the game already starts with the same sprites and stage for example ) In another words, it’s the same game. Dracula X is the perfect example for a stripped down version, but not a different game. It even tells the storyline before Castlevania symphony of the night. Important: What you should know, Dracula X was made for the western clientele. Back then in the 90s, such poor ports, were very common because of the cultural huge difference between Japan and the West, because of the topic child/ youth protection and because of profite at less effort. Unfortunately….. The memory storage was a problem, too. ( CD vs. cartridge) Konami was also afraid they couldn’t sell enough copies by publishing the original Rondo in the west. ( a Little Girl killing bloody skeletons, demons and a vampire? More than odd for the 90s western government. Especially USA ) For me, Dracula X / Vampires Kiss was a small insult for the original. Rondo of blood was truly the benchmark in the 90s. But I don’t care about being right. If you think it’s a different game … My eyes see a poor stripped down version , where many gameplay elements were omitted. ( See the reasons above ) Nobody can know or understand everything. It’s not a shame…. I wish you a nice Sunday. 🙂

It's superior in basically every way. Music, Graphics, Sound, Level Design, being semi non linear, and being able to play as Maria. Also Dracula X is not canon, It states that Maria and Annette are sisters, when they aren't. The only things Dracula X has over Rondo is being way more accesible. SNES emulation is way easier to come by than PCE. DX is on 3DS, Wii U, and the Collection. Rondo was only on Wii (not even translated), and on PSP and Ps4.

The final boss is very poorly designed but imo the final boss of the first NES game is actually harder. To clap the final boss of Dracula X you just need to be patient, stay in the middle and throw an axe or two whenever possible. The timing takes a lot to get used to because the first form is vulnerable for a very brief period but its doable. Keep in mind that when you crouch its much less likely that the projectile attacks will push you off. Its a blessing that the individual attacks of the final boss don't deal a lot of damage and that there is a healing item in the arena. This fight would be extremely frustrating if Drac could kill you in 3 or 4 shots like he can in some other games..
