In this clip, explorer, extreme athlete and 3x World First Record Holder Ash Dykes details what it was like during his time in Madagascar battling the bubonic plague and contracting the deadliest strain of malaria which usually kills you within 24 hours!!
Ash recently head-lined global news by becoming the first person to hike the entire length of the Yangtze River in China. A 4,000-mile journey that took him 352 days to complete, he faced bears, altitude, wolves, landslides, blizzards and had to send 10 of the 16 team members (that joined him for short stints at different locations) home, due to altitude sickness, fear of wildlife and/or injury.
He also walked solo and unsupported across Mongolia in 2014, aged 23. The 1,500 mi (2,400 km) journey over the Altai Mountains and across the Gobi Desert took 78 days. He became known to locals as the "lonely snow leopard". In 2015 he completed the 1,600 mi (2,600 km) trek across Madagascar via its eight highest peaks, another world first. Along the way, he contracted the deadliest strain of malaria and was close to death.
