Hurricane Beryl reached an incredible 175mph Category 5 peak early this morning, and has gradually started to weaken as wind shear finally stamps its authority on the storm. Despite this, Beryl is still a Category 5 for a little longer as the eye starts to degrade, and will only slowly lose its intensity as it heads towards Jamaica. It is still possible if not likely that Beryl will be a Category 4 by the time it arrives in Jamaica, potentially making the strongest landfall in that island's history.
Jamaica is expected to interfere with the storm's structure further, and more weakening should happen as it reaches the western Caribbean. However, Beryl is still likely to be a Category 1 or 2 storm when it passes the Cayman Islands and makes landfall in the Yucatan Peninsula later this week.
Over the weekend, Beryl will emerge back into the Gulf of Mexico, and another landfall in northern Mexico or southern Texas is expected on Sunday or Monday. However, the strength of the storm remains very uncertain by this point, and could be anywhere from a tropical depression to a moderate hurricane.
