My dad, a great dog lover, said, "A good dog is just waitin' for orders." (RIP with all those dogs up there, Dad!)

I have an Aussie like this one. He is the most obedient dog I have ever had. Stay, heal, come - all with minimal training.

I like that get behind command. Those ears went right down and even though it's only a stump I could tell he's invisible tail kissed the ground as well. :3 I've got a 75% blue heeler 25% aussie shepherd but man that girly doesnt work cattle for jack. Brought her up to my show steer and the moment he swung his head in a challenge my heeler crouched and ran off. She kept stalking for his hock but any movement sent her packing.

I use my dogs daily for chore work. I have multiple Aussies. Love them. I don't ask them to down around cattle - but instead have trained a standing stop. Works great once they understand the concept. Have fun with your boy!

Agree that “down” near cattle woyld be hard to accept for a dog

If it works cattle its a cattle dog as opposed to a sheep dog people. His terminology is correct he never said it was an Australian cattle dog, just a cattle dog.

Good lookin' bulls and great dog. All you need now is a couple of good ranch horses and you'd be set! Thank you sharing. I really enjoyed the video.

Hey QuinFabolous, he's a cattle dog, not a Cattle Dog - Aussies bred to work cows are incredible cattle dogs!

Stupid question but can a young dog learn just by following an older dog? Or is training necessessry?

Curious. How long does it take from when you start training your aussie to get to the the point where Chuck is? Great video!!

Nathan LaCross my husband's Aussie is about 14 weeks old and knows sit, kennel, load up. My Aussie of 5 years knows sit, lay down, roll over, high five, shake, kennel and stay here. They're very easy to train. For each of my dog it took about 1 day for her to learn what it each word meant. It's the same way for the puppies too. I've also raised them for about 5 years and every one of them is that way to train.

It's more about how long does it take you to learn. The dog was already born smart. ;-b

Depends on how much time and discipline owner and the dog put in together. Better to learn at a young age of course.

They can be cheeky rascals also, testing edges when young constantly. We love how much they ham it up when not working. Kind souls. And need to be careful what you accidentally teach them as well, cause they are always watching us.

awesome dog! very well trained! and you can tell he loves and respects you. I saw a video recently, and have seen others, where handlers repeat commands, especially down, over and over or eventually yell them and of course the dog doesn't listen and is having a grand time running around or whatever. the dog just very clearly lacks respect or discipline and also, imo, dogs don't respond very well to anger or trying to force the commands and training. it's very very obvious when it's forced as well as very obvious when there's that connections. obviously training is required for all dogs but the good dogs just seem to have that bond and willingness to please as well as seeming to know what the handler wants before they ask. and of course the handlers respect the dog too. good dog/handler teams are a beautiful sight to see. anyway, sorry for the length of this post, but you seem like a respectable handler and your dog really seems to respect you too. i know this isn't big work like moving them from field to field or anything but it's still very impressive to see and beautiful to watch. your dog is wonderful and tbh i had never thought of using the dog for simple chores like this. most herding vids are big moves or herds, etc. anyways, nice video.

Also, it's Australian Shepherd, not Australian Sheep Dog! Where do you live, Valandinne? My trainer is against downing a dog around cows because it puts them at a disadvantage/in danger. She teaches stay on foot, which means hold them but move as needed to keep them where you want them. So, that would be good for the gate - don't let them get past you, dog!
