My great great grandfather, in Hampton's Carolina Cavalry, was in that battle.

Wow, thats very cool!!! Be proud of the fact that you had an ancestor that took part in arguably the most important and significant battle in American history.

Custer's men prevailed---entirely, and decisively--because they had Spencer rifles which could shoot seven rounds from a cylinder within the stock, reloaded, and shoot another seven rounds in mere seconds. This--the Spencer rifles (and other repeating carbines) that the Union had and the Confederates did not, determined the outcome of the Civil War. (Also, the South's general 'death wish' approach meant that Stuart and his men, who arrived behind the Northern position (as planned) very early and in the morning fog, waited until the fog dissipated and the sun rose further, instead of rushing through the Union lines, disrupting and upsetting everything. See General Jackson's night time attack on the British camp at New Orleans for an example of what cavalry can do when led by someone wishing production and not 'show'.)
