After spending all this time visiting Lake Superior, I'm sure you heard the Gordon Lightfoot song. When GL died last year, they rang the bell 30 times, 29 for each man on the Edmund Fitzgerald, and once for GL. I thought that was beautiful. The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald Gordon Lightfoot The legend lives on from the Chippewa on down Of the big lake they call Gitche Gumee The lake, it is said, never gives up her dead When the skies of November turn gloomy With a load of iron ore twenty-six thousand tons more Than the Edmund Fitzgerald weighed empty That good ship and true was a bone to be chewed When the gales of November came early The ship was the pride of the American side Coming back from some mill in Wisconsin As the big freighters go, it was bigger than most With a crew and good captain well seasoned Concluding some terms with a couple of steel firms When they left fully loaded for Cleveland And later that night when the ship's bell rang Could it be the north wind they'd been feelin'? The wind in the wires made a tattle-tale sound And a wave broke over the railing And every man knew, as the captain did too T'was the witch of November come stealin' The dawn came late and the breakfast had to wait When the gales of November came slashin' When afternoon came it was freezin' rain In the face of a hurricane west wind When suppertime came, the old cook came on deck sayin' "Fellas, it's too rough to feed ya" At 7 PM, a main hatchway caved in, he said "Fellas, it's been good to know ya" The captain wired in he had water comin' in And the good ship and crew was in peril And later that night when his lights went outta sight Came the wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald Does any one know where the love of God goes When the waves turn the minutes to hours? The searchers all say they'd have made Whitefish Bay If they'd put fifteen more miles behind her They might have split up or they might have capsized They may have broke deep and took water And all that remains is the faces and the names Of the wives and the sons and the daughters Lake Huron rolls, Superior sings In the rooms of her ice-water mansion Old Michigan steams like a young man's dreams The islands and bays are for sportsmen And farther below Lake Ontario Takes in what Lake Erie can send her And the iron boats go as the mariners all know With the gales of November remembered In a musty old hall in Detroit they prayed In the maritime sailors' cathedral The church bell chimed 'til it rang twenty-nine times For each man on the Edmund Fitzgerald The legend lives on from the Chippewa on down Of the big lake they call Gitche Gumee Superior, they said, never gives up her dead When the gales of November come early

As I have previously told you the French were the first Europeans in Minnesota & in Wisconsin. As late as the 1830’s I have seen Wisconsin written as “Ouiscansan”. When les voyageurs ask the First Nation people what they called the lands they wrote it down what they heard in French ears. The Native people had more vowel & consonant sounds than French. When English took over New France in 1763 the changed the French sounding words to English sounding words. Still many locations & town retain French names~city of Fond du Lac.

Glad you got to see and enjoy that. I went to Michigan Tech. University, so I am quite familiar with Lake Superior. We use to vacation up there in the farthest northernmost Upper Peninsula every year on vacation. The brown in the water is just Tannin, from the trees. They have the coolest falls. The thing we liked about it was it was so open, unpopulated, unregulated, air was fresh, water was good, and just nice to get away from the big cities, and the over complications of life, which really we don’t need. I’m happy you got exposure and indulged in that. Come up again to Michigan for some winter fun on snow mobiles, dog sleds, and cross country skiing - plus food and DRINK! Your videos of your explorations are greatly appreciated and extremely entertaining. Your journey to Big Manitou Falls in Wisconsin's Pattison State Park was beautifully filmed and showed the beauty of this majestic waterfall whose thundering roar was thought to be the mighty voice of the great Manitou Spirit according to the local Native American tribes. I live less than two miles from Pattison Park and a very, very long time ago (I'm 75) as a young teenager, before climbing there was prohibited, I used to climb down the black basalt walls of the steep gorge to the very base of the mighty falls. Feeling its swirling cool mists blowing on my skin and feeling the deep powerful vibrations of the tons of falling water right before me were unforgettable experiences. Unfortunately, today such an off-limits view from the bottom of the falls is all but impossible. However, there are excellent overhanging observation platforms on the North and South sides of the waterfall's deep gorge that give great views of Manitou Falls, the fourth highest waterfall east of the Mississippi. Cheers!

I noticed a CCC sign (Civilian Conservation Corps) which was a program during the Great Depression (1930s) that employed young men to remodel and build trails, bridges and structures in State and National Parks. They also planted millions of trees. Most of the improvements and roads were widened and paved by the CCC. Wonderful video Marie. Most visitors do not see what you have seen. As you have noted Lake Superior is the largest freshwater Lake in the World. The other lakes in the Great Lake system are also sizeable. In the early 1980’s the US State governors & the Canadian Provincial Governors signed a joint pact to never export Great Lake anywhere else. Any diversion of Great Lake water has to be approved by a governmental body made up of the US States & Canadian Provinces.

Beautiful places. I haven't been to Minnesota or Wisconsin, but have been to the Upper Peninsula of Michigan and the terrain and water color is the same. I love it up there. Thanks for the kayak journey. It was lovely. I've hiked up there several times and it reminds me of it. Thanks again.

Marie every one of your videos is an absolute work of art. You do such a great job of showing the best of the USA wherever you are. Our government should hire you to do PR for us in France. Thank you for an absolute gem of a video. Rich and Mila in Seattle. ♥

I am a new subscriber. I have greatly enjoyed watching & listening to you about not only my home state but also my father’s - Wisconsin. I am so very happy that you got to see the North Shore of Lake Superior in all its beauty. If you ever decide to come back to this area, I would come when the trees are changing colors - we have beautiful fall (autumn) colors.
