That s what happened to my great uncle s son living in hong kong, my dad used to tease the kid... teochew nang boi tah teochew ueh. Both of them my great uncle and his kid speak cantonese... on a daily basis... Note: excuse my not being able to write 汉字,because i have only self study up to only about 1,500 character as of now, but i could read them though with help from apps dictionary...
It's rather refreshing to me to hear a well educated fellow Teochew speaking the dialect. Your presentation and delivery in a more formal tone does make a difference from those heard in daily conversations, small chats or squabbles hahaha. I grew up in a Teochew family, so I know it too well. For the dialect to retain its relevance in the long term and not disappearing into obscurity, there is an urgent need for cultural and societal improvement and prosperity of Chaoshan region as a whole. Yes, there are many prominent Teochew corporate figures. If only they can get together to fund projects in promoting our dialect and culture at various levels, at public address in the media, in Teochew food, music, songs and performances, in our sophistication and manners, courtesy etc to gain wider acceptance, interests, respect and prominence. You're doing us proud in making this video for a start.
