Nice job, John. Takeaways are the juice YIELDS are the same (look at the levels of each pitcher-tiniest difference); the Champion's teeth rip open the cells better and get more MINERALS so I believe your taste buds were getting THAT, and not just oxidation. Long ago Norwalk juicers paid a lab to test the nutrients in 3 different types of juicers/presses. These were the centrifugal juicers (lowest mineral content, lots of oxidation), next was the Champion which had DOUBLE the mineral content due to the teeth's ripping open the cell walls and slowly pushing the ground pulp through a tapered tube vs. a centrifugal juicer (acts like a spinning record with teeth, and the pulp is centrifugally slung outward and upward due to the conical juice basket). The final test was the Norwalk which if I remember correctly again DOUBLED even the Champion (a 1-step juicer which 'masticated' the pulp as it got pushed through a tapered tube). MINERALS are the keys to nutrition. I once spoke by phone with Dr. Norman Walker who literally wrote the book on juicing and raw foods, and invented his Norwalk (Norman Walker) juice press. He lived to a ripe old age and started us all on the juicing habit for superior health. Again, I respectfully disagree with John's take that the COLOR difference was only due to oxidation, but I know the minerals and their visible pigments are more strongly concentrated with a toothed Champion than a NAMA can possibly produce. At the end of this video John excitedly points up how the Champion (actually and simply explained as a result of its teeth on its auger and its tapered tube) BLOWS AWAY the taste of fruit sorbets made in the NAMA. I have owned several Champions, a Norwalk juice press, many centrifugals, a couple of slow speed twin auger juicers, and currently use an Angel commercial juicer (best of all). Every time I make juice in my commercial Angel I think of how striking is its TASTE, its texture's being almost akin to drinking PAINT or INK since the mineral content is multiple times other juicers. It is simply an amazing experience. Others taste watery by comparison and my Angel does produce up to 40% more juice in my tests. Think of what your cost difference would be if you could make your car run 40% more miles per gallon. This all said, the Nama or Hurom (I believe made in the same South Korean factory) ARE fantastic for getting one a super juice with minimal effort. People really love them.(Those are the best they have tried.) Back to the difference in taste of the NAMA juice vs. the Champion. It is really like John correctly and enthusiastically tells us, how deeeelicious is a Champion's frozen fruit sorbets vs. the NAMA's. Reason: NAMA only pushes produce through its 'tunnel' with a rotating auger mashing it up against the walls and the juice scraped through a screen. NAMA operates with zero sharp teeth; Champion's teeth really rip open produce fibers and thus release more nutrients. As practical and wonderful as they are I DARE you, John or NAMA to TEST MINERAL CONTENT of juices vs. a PURE or Norwalk press or that of an Angel). Yes, the cutter speed is 1725 on Champion vs. 50 rpm's on the NAMA's auger so of course with a NAMA there is less air whipped into the juice to oxidize it. Just drink it sooner rather than storing it. I personally modified several Champions and got fun results. Champions' motors are 1/3 hp 1725 rpm. For soft fruits I used a 1/2 hp /500 rpm motor and added a variable speed control so I can dial its speed down to 100 rpm's. It is fantastic for fruits with full benefits of sharp TEETH plus low oxidation. Then I hopped up another Champion and used a 3/4 hp/1725 rpm motor and WOW, it made juicing carrots or the hardest vegetables or roots so easy, almost effortless, (it would literally disintegrate hard ginseng into dust in an instant) and those sharp teeth ripped open way more cell walls than any centrifugal or current NAMA, etc.for an incredibly pigment/mineral-rich juice. Years ago on a phone call I suggested to Richard of Plastaket Mfg, Champion's family manufacturing operation, that "This is the juicer Plastaket SHOULD make" which was ignored. I was going to send him mine for free to prove it but he acted disinterested in something which may have turned that juicer's popularity into something incredible, able to rival anything out even today. Then I hopped up yet another Champion, installing a 2HP (6X as powerful as the factory's motors), 3450 rpm motor. Net effect: I could juice or use the solid blank screen (the one John shows you for fruit sorbets) (and nut butters) to grind a 25-jb bag of organic carrots in 5 minutes. Try that with a NAMA. It would take 5-10 NAMAS. I took it along to some vegan potlucks and everybody was spellbound. They couldn't believe what their eyes were seeing. Friends, I had already owned a Norwalk (the PURE juice press works similarly today with a few improvements- 1st step GRINDS the produce, 2nd step SQUEEZES). Although I use a commercial slow speed Angel, I love pressed juice. PER MINERAL ASSAYS (nobody bothers doing this easy test today for juicer comparisons - I think I saw that Angel juicers HAD conducted such tests) a press gets you several times more minerals than centrifugals and 2X the Champion's mineral content. The negative to me of the Norwalk (or even today's PURE juice grinder/press is the tiny yield for the amount of work and mess- only a PINT per hydraulic press stroke. So what did I do? I created a hydraulic juice press which used my Champions to grind and my custom press used a full sized restaurant pan 12" x 20" x 2" and used press cloths folded over, full of ground produce). Can you guess its yield per STROKE? Almost 1 GALLON. Anyway, it's still here and I never marketed it. This is like a PhD level treatise on juicing for those elite juicing aficianados who want to know what is possible, is secretly 'out there', being done, not yet marketed. Back to NAMAs, HUROMs: they are to simple to use and yield very good results, and as John pointed out, one of Huroms (I think the model 320) is way easier to clean than a NAMA (both made in the same mfg facility) and the HUROM gives the same quality juice. It is just that NAMA got several popular KZitem raw foodists and juice enthusiasts onboard early to help popularize it.... This was shared just for fun since like all of you, I, too enjoy John's excellent comparison videos. After such a prolix dissertation, I say go for it with either a NAMA or HUROM if you want quick, easy, nice quality (not THE best) juice. For elitists get the new Goodnature Hummingbird (grinds, then presses and takes 1 minute to clean) or an Angel, and a commercial Angel is THE ultimate.

Thanks for all your comments and your YEARS of Juicing experience and experimentation. That is how things get better! Your experience with modifying your champion to a higher or lower speed is amazing. Before they went out of business, champion DID come out with a variable speed model. Which I found interesting, but it was using their newly designed auger, that I was not impressed with. I would agree, I should have mentioned minerals. YES, I did see that study comparing norwalk vs champion vs high speed. That being said tribest did a similar test TWIN gear, norwalk, champion and high speed and it showed the twin gear (with magnetic and FIR technology) even pulled out MORE minerals than the norwalk! I have not seen other studies on minerals since then. While I do agree ONE of the many benefits of juice are the minerals, as produce these days have less minerals than they did 50 years ago. To me, a more important factor is Phytonutrients, but in reality juicing works because it concentrates the most nutritious parts of veggies and makes it easier to digest. As you point out, each person needs to determine the features in a juicer that are MOST important to them. The Nama J2 is "easy" of juicers of yesteryear, due to the auto-feeding hopper, and the Hurom H70 makes it EVEN easier since you can rinse off the parts to clean. I do not promote the Angel Juicer because I sent them $3k prepayment for juicers, and they never sent me the juicers. They went out of business. They then re-emerged, and denied to send me the juicers they owed me. I made a video to share this story with my viewers, and instead of just sending me the juicers, they decided to hire a lawyer to make me take my video down. I will NOT recommend any company that does business in a way I do not agree with despite how well the juicer may work. Then again, EVERY juicer has its own set of pros and cons.

Thank you so much for such an in depth master class.. It's that detail that speaks to my heart.... With that, may I please ask for your recommendation as to which juicer you think I should buy? First of all, I've had the exact champion juicer, in this video, for 25 years.. I love it but I've often felt that it takes a lot more time than I want to give. But I thoroughly understand the importance of juicing as I have done many juice fasts... Some 3-5 day fasts. Others 14 days and a few in the low 20 day range... My priorities are: - the ability to juice root vegetables like carrots and beats and even celery and ginger. - While also being able to juice kale and spinach...( I think I have been successful with my championship by rolling up my greens nice and tight and chasing them with root vegetables like a carrot or something) - Maximum nutrient content is important but I but I am really focused saving time.. And I know that it is a fine balance between maximum nutrition and return on time. What juicer will yield me a good nutritional value While saving me the most time.... I view cutting the produce to fit into the champion to be very time consuming.. And if I want good clean juice I find that I'll have to spoon off the foam and then even run the Juice through a strainer a couple of times..... I like to juice and I want to be able to juice in the 2-3 quart range. And I found that in order to maintain a good yield of juice that I have to do a quick clean on the screen and everything halfway through the process.... I hope this makes sense and again, I love your master class... Sincerely, Thank you!

@@SteveMintonMarketingATTENTION JOHN KOHLER AND OTHERS WANTING TO EXPERIENCE ONE OF THE ULTIMATE DIY JUICERS FOR REAL 'BATCH' JUICING AND DAILY JUICING FUN: (John, if YOU do this, get Richard of Plastaket to try yours and restart their business. PURE Juicer and Welles Presses can also use these as their 'grinder' before pressing, and amaze customers)....if enough interest I might make a few more of my 1-GALLON per stroke presses to accompany these. For liability I have to say, this is how I did it- you make the call and be safe about what you do...and by doing indemnify me, thanks. (Don't stick your nose into it, etc.) Newer Champions had a magnetic disconnect which makes sure all housing parts are in place before the machine can be turned on- this a a great feature I recommend you find- some used ones on eBay will have this feature....on with the show... -Thanks, Steve. Since you already have a Champion juicer on hand (as do may of us) , For way less money invested than in any new juicer, go onto eBay and get eBay item number:300616347786 which is a $600-700 2HP single phase 3450 RPM motor going on a surplus sale for only $90. It has a 1" shaft x 4.5"L. Take it along with your Champion to any local machine shop and ask them to mill down the shaft to 1/2" diameter (they can use a digital micrometer on your Champion's shaft-it must allow a Champion cutter to slide onto it- maybe going .0495" will help avoid cutters 'sticking' to shafts) and then shorten it to 3.5". Then have them mill a flat side into the shaft for your Champion's cutter (show them yours). You will need to order an Amazon Winco ($11) 1/2 size 'hotel pan' , 6" deep (actually 6" High). TAKE IT ALONG TO YOUR MACHINE SHOP. Once your machine shop modifies your new 2HP motor's shaft for you, they can attach the front face plate onto it from your Champion. From there you have your own CUSTOM Champion, almost... Flip the hotel pan upside down and bolt the new monster motor onto it. Use SS bolts and nuts (your machine shop has these.). The 6"H hotel pan will end up giving the center of your new motor's shaft a 9" height off your kitchen counter, making life easy when pushing bowls underneath to catch the voluminous juice flowing. Order from Amazon 1 or 2 of these: Anchor Hocking Batter Bowl, 2 Quart Glass Mixing Bowl with Blue Lid ($23 each w/nice lids to go right into your refrigerator). Since the big 2HP motor pulls 23 amps/2500W just for a second at startup and then drops to an 11 running amps load ( half the brief no-load startup amperage), you'll want to get a great cord the machine shop can wire into your motor. Amazon has this: Iron Forge Cable 10 Foot Lighted Outdoor Extension Cord - 10/3 SJTW for $33 and it is rated for 15 amps. It should be fine for your juicer. Go for it and WOW your friends and yourself with a really cool juicing system, unbelievably fast and easy to use. Let us know here if you take this to heart and let your local machine shop fab your CUSTOM Champion..

You can't juice a banana. Well you can but you get poor results no matter what juicer you use, even the J2. Which is why the Nama J2 juicer comes with a smoothie attachment. If I wanted a banana sorbet then the Nama isn't the machine I would use. I would use an ice cream/sorbet maker that is made and designed to make sorbet. There isn't a single machine that can do everything but you can pick the best one for your kitchen to keep your collection of kitchen equipment from overrunning your kitchen space.

John take some of your blood and look at it under a microscope after the champion and after the Nama the blood cells should be dancing around after a good dose of each.
