Tomb Guard entrance test attrition is 80%. And that's just to begin the training to be a Sentinel. The eventual test after training, the test which decides whether or not you get to take the name of Tomb Guard Sentinel has a test attrition rate of 90% Basically, every 100 applicants will only, on average, produce 2 actual trained and qualified Sentinels. To put it into perspective, more people have won the Medal of Honour than have been awarded a Tomb Guard badge. For as long as the Sentinels exits, no one can claim the US military has no honour.

@Anne - No, that's not it. The whole point if the tomb of the unknowns is that they are "known only to God," so contrary to your mendacious assertion, we know where they are (remains are six feet under, spirit is in heaven or hell), and at least God knows who they are, which is why they can remain in a state of eternal repose and rest. What the op is talking about is the loneliness of the tomb sentinel from the elite 3rd Infantry Regiment "Old Guard," who does his duty - alone - 24/7, 365 days a year, rain or shine, hot or cold, night and day, most of the times when no one is watching as they stand watch doing their monotonous drill pacing back-and-forth until they are properly relieved by their replacement. The average citizen cannot comprehend the commitment and dedication such task entails and the sheer boredom and delusions that can plague even the most senior guard. My drill sergeant at Ft. Benning -- where all Old Guards go through 14 weeks of 11B OSUT along with all other U.S. Army infantry -- was a former Tomb Sentinel in the Old Guard at Arlington NC. He told us stories of how tomb sentinels doing their paces in the middle of the night would experience delusions and optical illusions as a result of the monotony of being on their feet for so long doing their paces. He later deployed to Germany, but considers his two-years as a tomb sentinel with the Old Guard the foundation of his infantry career.

A civilian guard was first posted at the Tomb on November 17, 1925 to prevent, among other things, families from picnicking on the flat marble slab with beautiful vistas of the city. A military guard was first posted on March 25, 1926. The first 24-hour guard was posted on midnight, July 2, 1937. The Tomb of the Unknowns has been guarded continuously, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, since that time. Inclement weather,[24] terrorist attacks,[25] et cetera, do not cause the watch to cease.[26]

I'm surprised some people here in the comments think that this is a waste of taxpayer money. 1. These guys make less than 30k a year. Imagine that. Protecting 350,000,000+ people in a 24/7 job, and you only make 30k. 2. I'm perfectly fine with my money going towards paying people to defend our country, and im certainly happy to pay for them to guard a final resting place for people that died forthe country. 3. Their role isn't solely to guard the tomb. Its also to show respect and honor for ALL that have died for the country. 4. You should feel like absolute trash. You are literally telling the very people that defend your life and rights, that get shot at, blown up, or killed, that their measly 30k annual salary is a waste of money. How about you go to any military hospital and try telling that to the guy missing his legs. Of course the people that think this have NO SKIN in the game. They are self absorbed assholes who are too spoiled to see the suffering that these men go through, and they get so little in return compared to how much they give. SHAME ON YOU, you DISGUSTING worm.

It's chilling to watch. The extreme loyalty to their cause; honoring not only the unknown soldiers whose remains lie beneath the marble, but to also the unknown families who never saw their son's faces again after bravely leaving home to protect our nation. Even in the worst of storms, the Rock of the Marne remain there in silence, humbling their respected duties for the ones who paid the ultimate price. Carry on oh brothers, carry on.

As far as being there through storms and weather and whatever, these guys are in the 98th percentile from that Regiment, every one of them. Guys like that don't look for comfort when they are performing their solemn duty here.

Very interesting to see the modifications made to the standard procedure due to the inclement weather.

Back in 2003, when Hurricane Isabel Category 5 coming up along the Atlantic coat line of the U.S. They were given permission to suspend the assignment to guard the tomb because of the danger of the storm...but they decline. It was the first time they refuse to leave their post and they did it again in Hurricane Sandy. W/e it day by night, rain or shine, cold in snow or hot in the sun, even on Christmas day. My hat is off to them giving the greatest respect I have ever seen.

@kenns9 you didnt clarify A gun is a muzzle or breech-loaded projectile-firing weapon. A rifle is a firearm designed to be fired from the shoulder, with a barrel that has a helical groove or pattern of grooves ("rifling") cut into the barrel walls.
