Channyn Lynne Parker was a community advocate for transgender people who are detained in Chicago’s Cook County Jail. In this installment of We Are Witnesses: Chicago, she talks about the openly hostile environment she encountered when she walked into the men’s jail: “I was someone who came from a population that should not be heard.”
Parker was one of the first openly trans people to work in the Cook County Department of Corrections. Within jail walls, she held workshops for incarcerated people. “The trans women who we sought to serve - they were the forgotten population,” she explained. “My role was to engage them as best I could.”
