It’s very Lovecraft, Homer is the great old one, Springfield is his cult, and Grimes is the outsider driven mad by the exposure to the mythos.

I never understood why Grimes was angry at Homer but never at his boss Mr. Burns who didn't have courtesy to shake his hand. Now I know by experience people like him are bootlickers and resentful to co-workers when they don't get the success they hope for

Maybe they get into this later in the episode but wasn't the primary writer for this a big time libertarian freak who used Grimes as a mouthpiece to air a lot of his grievances out

John Swartzwelder, yes, and despite his politics he was a very good writer, wrote a lot of the classics. Many which lampooned his own politics by giving Homer his own views, like Cartridge Family. Gen X people were weirdly drawn to libertarianism, I feel like it doesn't make sense to put them against our current political situation
@dickdingus775

@@RememberShuffle i agree and yeah I don't doubt the dudes talent despite my aversion to his politics. RE the gen x libertarian connection I think given how discredited and uncool socialism/leftism was in the post cold war "end of history" era of the 90s, being libertarian was an easy way to seem transgressive and countercultural while still indulging in the liberal capitalist triumphalism of the times Also really digging your channel, it's been great digging through all these old Matt Christman appearances while he recovers from his stroke, great stuff

John Kricfalusi is the Ren & Stimpy guy, which was often lumped in with the Simpsons for 90s cartoon moral panics. It came out later that John K was a serial groomer and pedophile who used job offers at his studio to lure teenage girls into his orbit.

I grew up watching Simpson's. Hated this episode. It breaks the illusion of the show by showing not only what an oaf homer is, but the effect of endless relentless tragedy and the success of complete stupidity. That isn't really funny. It's not like Moleman or Gil. Grimes just ate shit like a real person and it was sad to watch. I also hate The Office and the manager(Michael?) I don't like shows that try to endear me to foolishness and incompetence. They shouldn't be winning and I shouldn't be coaxed to root for them.
