Great job in explaining this to the average, everyday-Jjoe. Of the 'countless' videos here on youtube for Cap installations, this is at the top of a very short list. I'd actually feel comfortable sending a link to somebody who's never done it. Great video.

A capacitor is wired in PARALLEL not in series. When you wire a electrical components in parallel, you wire all the positive terminals together and all the negative terminals together. When you wire electrical components in series, you connect the negative of one component to the positive of the next component. The connection method used will have an effect on the component. That's why when you wire two subwoofers with identical impedance in parallel, the amp will have a higher output as where it will have a lower output if you were to wire those two subs in series.

Very clear most inexperienced can understand. I really like how you used the lightbulb in the fuse block that is brilliant. But I will say a capacitor is not basically a battery. The only thing a battery and capacitor have in common is the fact they store electrical energy but their application and execution are two different type of characteristics. Again kudos for the lightbulb I never would have thought of that.

i couldnt understand the point of the light bulbs i seen in the videos i watched, i didnt know it dimming meant it was charged, thought they were discharging it or something, made no sense. thanks a lot, im getting a cap in about a week and i needed to know how to do this.

Just signed in to say thank you for taking time out to make such a kick ass tutorial. I've picked thru many in the last hour or so and NONE are as thorough as this! One question I'm curious about is...what if a garage is working on my car and disconnect the battery for something? Will everything be ok once the power is reconnected or will I have to tell them about charging and discharging the cap?

@millermudlife you only need to charge it the first time you install, or when you take out your battery, other then that it constantly charges off your battery

Without singling anyone out. There is a difference between a good cap and a shitty cap. If you go with a cap go 2F or more. For most set ups a cap is a good thing(one or two amps and a sub or two). When you get into the 3-4000rms range is when you bring in multiple batteries and upgrade your alternator.

(continued). Most caps with a digital display will remain on even when your car is off...they will generally shut off when they reach their "low power" mark. My digital 2.0F cap(Massive audio) sits at 14.4V running two amps with stock battery and alternator. Never had a bulb dim in my life with it and had it for about 3 or 4 years now!

Okay first a capacitor isn't a battery otherwise it would be called a battery. A battery is just stored energy where as a capacitor can first output more voltage than the input ;but provides extra energy along side the supplied constant from the battery. When the bass hits really hard the capacitor provides extra voltage so the amp doesn't draw power from everywhere it can and dim all the lights. It's not being drawn from all the time.

I don't think you have to worry about getting shocked at 12V. below 70V DC or 50V AC it's considered "safe voltage" and that was partially the reason that 12V was chosen for car electric systems. Sure the energy stored may be large, but it's completely safe at 12V, only thing that could happen is a fire if you short it.

The amperage is what'll get you regardless of the voltage in most cases. A 12 volt system is widely underestimated until you get hurt with an "oops".

Good idea, but also you should worry about your power cable, I see you also have some speaker wire for your ground! please take it professional and get your stuff installed properly. And yes your cap will help out a little, but what will really hep is: the same gauge wire from battery back to your trunk, also reground your engine, and your chase of the car, and run positive straight to battery from your alternator, its called big 3. I hope you didn't burn or damage anything by now :)

h.o. alternator > big 3 > extra/better battery > capacitor... the problem with capacitors is people think they are useful in every situation, these are only good when you're close to the verge of what your electrical system can handle, so for a guy like this runnin tiny marine speakers yea its probably alright, but if you're running a real kw or two these are nothing more than an expensive voltage reader.

@betto530 the LED lights on the cap will stay on so long as the CAP keeps receiving power from the battery and the cap should NOT be connected as instructed in this video that is the wrong way to connect the CAP it will go out in a few days or weeks some times longer and you can damage your cars battery or your amp do NOT connect it like that the CAP should go in line so positive goes to the cars battery and the amps positive input

I KNOW I CAN TURN THEM ON MANUALLY BY DISCONNECTING MY HEAD TEMP SWITCH BUT,(ITS HARD ON THE CHARGING SYSTEM & THE WIRING) I HAVE A SYSTEM & 1 FAROD CAP BUT I HAVE TO USE A LIGHTBULB TO CHARGE & DISCHARGE! ALSO, MY FUSE FOR MY AMP IS JUNK ( DOESN'T COME APART) SHOULD I DISCONNECT THE BATTERY FROM THE BATTERY 1st & then discharge the cap right??? because, I want to disconnect my amp & discharge my cap b4 drawing 40 amps to manually use my cooling fans constantly as I drive until I gat a new head temp switch.

Josue Aguilar if your reading 18v on your cap. Your alternator regulator is bad. You should see about 14.0-14.6v. I've been installing car audio for years I can tell you capacitors are a wast of money. I almost have never seen them give any noticeable difference in "sound quality" or voltage. A better battery is your best bet. XS power makes the best battery's on the market. Replace your stock battery or buy a supplemental battery and do the big 3. And your system should be fine. If not then a bigger alternator is required.
