Considering moving to Charleston, SC? Here's three things I wish I knew about the lowcountry before moving here:
Moving to Charleston, SC? You're not alone! With 30 new residents daily, the Charleston metro is booming, growing six times faster than the national average. But before you pack your bags, there are a few things I wish I'd known, and I'm here to share those insights with you.
First up, let's talk traffic and infrastructure. Charleston's population has nearly doubled since 2000, but our roads and public services haven't kept pace. Despite being the 72nd most-populated metro in the U.S., we rank 44th for longest commute times. Low property taxes, while great for homeowners, contribute to slower infrastructure development, leaving us with significant congestion and ongoing construction projects.
Then there's the weather - a mix of all seasons, often in the span of a single week. Summers can be brutally hot and humid, thanks to our coastal location. But it's not just the heat; we also need to stay prepared for hurricanes and the occasional severe rainstorm. Despite these challenges, the beauty of Charleston's spring and autumn months, with their perfect temperatures, cannot be overstated.
And we can't forget about the local wildlife, particularly the bugs. Mosquitoes and no-see-ums can make outdoor evenings less enjoyable during warmer months, while fire ants pose a year-round nuisance. Not to mention the termites that threaten our homes, making a termite bond essential for every homeowner.
Despite these challenges, Charleston's charm, history, and community make it an incredible place to live. If you're considering the move, I'm here to help navigate the quirks and joys of Lowcountry living.
