@ChristopherSadlowski

I looked up Charlie because, while I know of him, I don't know him or any of his content. He's a 28-year-old white dude from Florida, so there's a lot going on right there alone. I spent a year in Florida in college and had to come back to New Jersey after a year because the people down there are...a trip is putting it lightly. Plus, the education I was getting was going over things I had learned in middle school, so I wasn't gathering much new information. Charlie has a LOT of growing up to do IN MY OPINION. He needs to get out there and see some of the world and the different kinds of people in it, he needs to talk to them, he needs to see just how bad it can be for some people, and he needs to learn why certain things are so upsetting to various groups. I'm getting very "sheltered middle class white kid" energy from him. You know, reading things and watching videos online can teach you SOME things, but it also exacerbates some pretty huge blind spots; I think Charlie needs to get out a little more and expand his horizons. I get THE FEELING he spends way, WAY too much time in his house talking to a computer rather than real people. But that's just my opinion on the extremely limited knowledge I have. I can only extrapolate based on my observations of kids like Charlie that I've gathered from my lived experience.

@TheZombifiedGuy

Yeah that was the moment where it clicked for me. The video makes a lot more sense if you view it through the lens of Charlie trying to justify liking idubbbz's content at the time, or participating in that problematic culture himself. Of course he doesn't want to believe he was enjoying racist content. But there are ways to process that other than publicizing your internal conflict, leading to your own take overshadowing the apology itself. I agree with D'Angelo that there's (hopefully) no nefarious intent here, but then that was kind of the point of the apology in the first place. People can't reliably intuit someone's intent, and if it has the same effect as what you say you didn't intend, you have to own up to that.

The little we can do or say about it is better than setting the bar so low. What if they were to tell you it's ok since it's "reclaiming" the word? The logic being that people that have done the same must also be bad people and so they get all defensive and weird about it. It's absurd behavior- it's how I behaved when hurting feelings during mental breakdowns as a teenager. When I finally got the help I needed to stop doing all that, I had to realize how ridiculous it is to only apologize for intentional harm. It's literally just an acknowledgment of some sort if wrong. I say sorry if I lightly bump into a stranger at the grocery store, most if us do. Are we intentionally bumping into them? No! Is it incorrect to apologize? No! In fact, people tend to find it rude when people don't apologize and that's completely fair. It's scary how many people treat apologies the way I did at the height of my severe mental illness. Since people like Charlie don't believe it, I'm here to testify that I infact, as a 19-year-old when Ian's content cop videos were coming out, was influenced by him normalizing slurs and misogynistic language and thought patterns. It affected my beliefs and I had to unlearn it. Ian didn't solely cause that effect on me, he was just one piece of a larger narrative in society. Now he's actually realizing that programming is very negative and is used to tear others down, which is what he was doing, and that's what I used to do. So if you're like Charlie and you don't think that type of content is harmful, it definitely can be. Maybe not to you or anyone in your life, but honestly it does make an impact.

Slurs can be so much more impactful than how they seem when being limited to that of a general common humor in bad taste. Regardless of if the person saying them is super racist, bigoted, or not. I never would imagine slurs would affect me as they do, but unfortunately I can't just decide out of the blue that they don't carry an internal weight to them for me. That they don't spur on a fear or dread or whatever distasteful emotion they manage to, within me. I don't think they're some sort of tool that holds power over my whole psyche or anything, but they're a bother and disappointment at the very least for sure. Just because some people (primarily people outside of the community the slur is about) who say them don't use them as weapons, doesn't mean all people don't. In my opinion, it's harmful to pretend that's not the case. As a black person as well, and as quite the fan of Charlie, I agree,, it too hurt some to hear him speak about this matter in the way he did.

i feel like a quote that applies really well to this video is “it’s not dark humor, you’re just an asshole.” (kurtis conner) it really sums up the fact that people hide their hatred and bias behind the label of being “edgy.” ian’s recognition of this is nice to see, especially because so many “edgy” influencers don’t realize the harm they are doing to young people who watch them. the things ian said will never be okay and he should always be held accountable, but it’s good to know that he had the maturity to apologize and address it. hopefully other people can learn from this and change their own views and opinions on edgy/dark humor.

As someone who lived through being casually called slurs by randos and even my own friends, i hated it and i hated every justification. I hated every mini idubbz and every shane dawson supporter that would confront me with slurs and stereotypes just because i was nearest black kid. Did i laugh at it sometimes? Yes. Was it funny? No. If i didnt laugh the "obvious joke" at my expense, i was bullied harder. I was labeled "too sensitive" and was boiled down to "another angry black" for being rightfully upset. And that was *just* at school. KZitem until maybe 2018, was a cesspit. If you even hinted at not liking a "joke" that was just any kind of "-ist" or "-phobic", you were dogpiled into oblivion with more slurs in the comments. But no "it wasn't just a different time" it was 2010's and i wish people would stop talking about it like it was 100 years ago. Just because "everyone's causally racist, ableist, or -phobic" doesnt mean those communities weren't impacted by it negatively. I'm glad idubbz and some other problematic youtubers from that time have apologized. Because even though they weren't the genesis of all targeted hate in the world, they were parts of the problem. "It's just edgy" is such a pet peeve of mine. Maybe it's just me, but having grown up on Tumblr I've always associated "edginess" with things like horror movie graphic t-shirts, butterfly knives and songs in which they say "fuck" a lot. Being intentionally mean and hurtful to make some kind of vague point about free speech or mental fragility or whatever isn't edgy, it's just a display of lacking empathy. IMO.

Ive literally had people in real life quote Idubbbz as an argument as why it was ok to call me a dyke, faggot, etc. I can respect the apology, and know it was necessary, but no one is required to forgive him. The effect he had shouldn't be downplayed.

Watching this video fully made me realize why so many people would say “I don’t understand why you’re upset, it’s just words”. Like I fully know people made fun of me and called me names just to get a reaction out of me and I tried not to give them one, but always did because I was an insecure teenager. When I would address it, it was always that I was being dramatic and it was just words. I was mostly called silly things that more annoyed me than upset me, but I was also called things that were actually offensive and they viewed all of them the same. It crazy how much this video made a lot of things make sense.
@469ka37

@Blissful DJ And this right here is the problem. You want people hurt by his actions to forget them completely because he apologized. Forgiveness loses its power if we forget what they were apologizing for in the first place. But I think what's even more telling is that iDubbz himself doesn't want them to forget what they're forgiving him for because he holds himself to that higher standard. It's up to him to grow and change and continue to have empathy. Not rescind that the moment someone hurt by his actions doesn't forgive him because if that's the case did he truly change? Did someone change if their actions are dependent on your forgiveness? Or should their change be dependent on themselves and their own personal journey?

Charlie was too old to be young and impressionable, he probably knew idubbbz wasn't coming from a malicious place but I was in highschool and 100% idubbbz, filthyfrank, maxmoefoe, and anythingforviews ALL influenced the boys in my life, even tho it was "all jokes" I hated myself for being a women and it's been a journey getting rid of my intermisogynist.
