Back in Spring of 1959 I had the privelage of seeing Charlie Gracie perform live while sitting in the studio audience of Fran Allison's daytime TV talk show on WGN-TV (channel 9) in Chicago while on a field trip with my 4th grade class. A truly great tho underrated and forgotten star of the 50s. ☺

I was first turned on to this in the song in the early '70's by Charlie's son, Charlie Gracie, Jr. who was a friend of mine at Aronimink Elementary School in Drexel Hill, PA. The Gracie's were from in Drexel Hill, PA. "Mr. Gracie" came to our classroom once and performed Butterfly in front of our class. He was really cool. Charlie, Jr. wore his thick black hair slicked back into a "duck tail" like his father. I thought it was "neat". It was really cool to then hear Butterfly played on Philadelphia AM radio stations while in the car. Great memories!

@bigkatt1974 What an honor!!! Thanks for the reply. I last saw Charlie perform here in the UK, early 90s. He was brill as always, reminded me so much of Eddie Cochran,{or should I say Eddie reminded me so much of Charlie} the way he moved and the way he held his Guitar. I guess they must have been good friends back in the late 50s.Charlie`s old Guild is "Somthin`else",still playing today!!!just think, all the great R and R"Stars" of the 50s, who have had the priv of playing that fine guitar.Wow!!

Gracie was one of the first ever to record rock´n roll in may, 1951(His "Boogie Woogie Blues"). He made some great rock´n roll in 1954-55 and signed with Cameo at the very end of 1956. "Night And Day, USA", "Cool Baby", "Trying", "Hurry Up, Buttercup" are titles that should have been big hits too hadn´t it been for the fact that Gracie was the first rocker to fight for justice and his right to his royalties(Cameo had to pay him 50000$ they kept away )and then lost interest in promoting him.

"Anthony September" pseudonym of "Anthony Mammarella" the producer of "American Bandstand". I know I have seen"Anthony September" as being the writer of the 1957 song "Butterfly" somewhere........Maybe it needs a bit more looking in too.......... Cheers!

By all accounts, Charlie Gracie was probably just about the first white guy to record Rock'n'Roll, his first records reputedly being cut as early as 1952 when Charlie himself was still only 16 years old. He and his music deserve to be remembered!

This song was really a hit out of Memphis (WMPS Radio) in about 1956. The original 45 (?) sounds a little better as to the backup harmony and the sustaining of his voice on "full-notes." But I don't think I've heard the original since the fifties. That last line, where he holds out the words 'You butterfly,' has particularly stuck in my mind after the decades. But the whole recording was, well, iconic.

New documentary on Dick Clark states " Gracie sued his Cameo Records label to recover unpaid royalties, and subsequently found himself blacklisted from "American Bandstand" and radio stations. It emerged that Clark had a financial arrangement with Cameo, the documentary said, which had paid him $14,000 for unspecified services related to "Butterfly." Gracie, subsequently revered by the likes of Graham Nash, George Harrison and Paul McCartney, slipped into obscurity"
