I use Pilot Varsities as a carry pen, a gimme pen that I can give to any newbie with an inquiring mind. I haven't run one out of ink in years. But yours is the best how-to video I've seen on the subject of the refill. Thanks.

Great giveaway entry level crack, I mean pen. Uncaps and writes even after being out of use for a while. It is that feed. They use it on other kinds of pens as well.

How is this possibly easier than the Platinum Preppy hack? I have two and I just filled the barrel with ink from an eye dropper, put some CVS petroleum jelly on the threads (not certain of the long term effects on the plastic but did not have any silicon grease on hand and no o-rings either) screwed it back together and right (pun intended) away, she writes. No leaks. I like your videos.

A fountain pen can save you the trouble going through all that hassle. A faber-castell loom fountain pen is to my knowledge one of the smoothest steel nibs and it takesa long international cartridge which holds about 1ml that can be refilled very easily or a converter. I hate those one single use fountain pens. Anyway, I enjoyed watching the video.

I had done this back in the 90s in my University days, but instead of pulling out the feed, I drilled the back, filled with Noodler's Black, and epoxies the hole closed. :) My first pen hack really. Of course, there are easier ways, with less peril down the line. But them my fingers are currently Baystate Blue, as I picked it as a first fill in a new cheap pen, and it came with a leaky convertor. What a mess. Works perfectly fine with a donor from PenBBS parts bag, but my hands are still partially Baystate Blue five days and many handwashes later. :)

Of course I could have worn gloves, but filled twenty pens before that one without any ink on my fingers, so perhaps I was a bit cocky. Also I don't mind wearing inky fingers as a bit of pride in my fountain pens.

Another tip is that the V Pen nibs are pretty good, and are all IIRC Mediums. The Pilot Petit only comes with a Fine, but has the same fitting, so I've swapped a couple of mine making Medium Petits (and Fine Vs for giving away)

I wish I had thought of this when I had a Varsity, it would have been fun. I first met the Varsity in the university bookstore when I was earning my mechanical engineering degree. I picked one up because my ballpoints were causing hand cramping during note taking. I loved that cheap fountain pen because I could write all day without any hand issues whatsoever. I have a fondness for the Varsity because it opened up the world of fountain pens for me. Thanks for the warm and fuzzy memory blast! 👍😁

Thanks for the very instructive video, Doug! However, I would highly recommend the non-violent ”vacuum-method” as a viable option. You need a 2 ml syringe, and a plastic or silicone tube that fits tightly over the outer diameter of the syringe. That tube will then fit tightly also over the outer diameter of your favourite disposable pen, be it a V-pen, or Zebra Fuente or Zensations. Cut the tube to a lenght that allows the nib and the nozzle of the syringe to have enough room inside the tube, when both the pen and the syringe are coupled together with the tube. If you want to start by rinsing the pen you begin with 1 ml of water in the syringe and a quarter of a milliliter of air. Holding the assembly perpendicular with the syringe on top, you pull the piston of the syringe, creating low pressure inside the tube. If you the let the piston return to the 1 ml mark, water will enter the pen!. Repeat until all the water is in the pen. To get the water back into the syringe you do the same maneuver with the system reversed 180 degrees. Repeat with fresh water as many times as necessary. Fill with ink in the exact same way, only with ink in the syringe instead of water.

I also support the nonviolent method that can be done using an eyedropper and a bulb syringe. I have even used it to refill a rollerball refill with good results.

@ermennda
2 жыл бұрын
It is this method: m.kzitem.info/news/bejne/r4eptIOKemiYh5w I must say that I did it for the heck of it and didn't test it long term. You need a narrower tube for a refill. Remember to suckt the air before trying to push in the ink.
@Johan-vk5yd
2 жыл бұрын
@@ermennda I misunderstood, and thought you used a bulb syringe. Thanks anyway.
@ermennda
2 жыл бұрын
You still need a bit of tubing and an eye dropper or syringe to put the ink into it. The advantage of the bulb syringe is that the rubber tip is easy to fit to various diameters of tubing and is very air tight when you make the vacuum.

I picked up a TWSBI Precision pen recently. With piston fillers, do you recommend undoing the filler cap to allow in air and increase ink flow, or you don’t think it’s necessary?
@InkquiringMinds
2 жыл бұрын
The filler cap? Do you mean turning the piston? There is no stop valve on piston filler, so I'm not sure where you allow air into the system.
@MrAndrew1953
2 жыл бұрын
@@InkquiringMinds Correct. If it doesn’t let air in there it ink flow will prime the feed ja? The TWSBI Vacs require opening the piston filler knob. I like piston fillers and eyedroppers for the volume of ink they can hold. Conklin crescent filler with a stub nib 1.1mm is another favourite.

Just applying some plumber’s clear silicone at each fill works fine for my ”eydropper” Preppies. You don’t necessarily have to wait for the silicone to cure, you can put pen to paper instantly. The moisture of the ink will even promote curing. The threads being very coarse, makes it easy to unscrew when it’s time for a refill, despite the silicone seal.
@martinlebl631

@@Johan-vk5yd Preppy body can crack, which is exciting when it is full of ink. These Varsity are bendable plastic, sonot as dangerous. Of course refills aren't as easy, so there are tradeoffs ad always.
