In this video I show you how to use a vag-com and VCDS to check the timing chain stretch on a 2.0T Audi. This car is a 2013 Audi A5.
Written:
1. Warm up engine and leave it running
2. Connect & open vcds
3. Choose select control module
4. Choose the Engine module
5. Give it a second to load and select Advanced Meas. (measuring) Values
6. A window will popup to search for values. Search for "Camshaft".
7. Check the box for any that say Camshaft Adaptation
8. In the main window look for "Camshaft Adaptation Intake Bank:1 Phase"
9. The value of this will tell you how stretched it is. Use this guide:
0 - 3 degrees = OK
3-5 degrees = schedule to replace chain at your convenience
5+ degrees = high risk of failure, replace timing chain soon
I suggest replacing at 4 or higher for sure. A failed timing chain on these engines can result in severe damage that will usually require a new engine or very expensive rebuild. Not worth risking.
