I had the same thing happen to my brand new Sawyer. Being a new backpacker, I was playing with the filter at home using tap water to see how it worked, a month later on the AT approach trail I could barely get a drop out of the filter, I was squeezing that CNOC bag so hard I swear I was going to pop it. Back at the hostel, one of the workers saw something similar in the past, apparently when I let it dry out after using it, the charcoal clumps up and blocks the flow. We fixed the filter by soaking it in plain warm tap water for about an hour then tapping it on a hard surface… it worked! Thanks for the video John, always find your content very useful 👍

I’ve got some more stuff to do before leaving: Test recipes and/or dehydrated meals to make sure you like them. Alert credit card companies of where you’ll be traveling to, to avoid potential fraud alerts. Esp. true for out of the country trips. Pay monthly bills Make sure camera memory has plenty of room for pictures / videos Turn up A/C, down heat Turn off water main - friend came home to a flooded house and 8 months of displacement while the insurance company did it’s thing. Great "common sense" advice that all to often we don't commonly do! 👍👍 I just got back from a 50 mile section hike on the Superior Hiking Trail! Beautiful trail. You might want to add it to your 2023 to do hikes!!

Thanks. I’ve been considering the SHT for a while. Hoping eventually the trail association cracks and lets Far Out do the maps.

Yes, I sure missed not having the FarOut app available. I had to use the SHT trail guide to plan my schedule and route. The trail itself is very well marked for navigating. I have a video of this past Sept trip if your interested!

All great things a backpacker should check! I got well into the Wind Rivers in 2017, only to find out my Sawyer Squeeze was inoperable as you described in the video. Fortunately, my buddy had me covered and we met a guy that had a filter to loan me on top of it all. The trail provides. Turns out, the guy that loaned me a filter was a water chemist, go figure. I now carry redundant water filtration/purification regardless. Thanks for sharing!

It’s not a good feeling when your filter isn’t functioning. Glad to hear the trail provided!

Just tested my Sawyer squeeze for a trip this weekend and it’s clogged. Guess I’m making a last minute run to REI.

Try vinegar. Works like a charm.

add a cup of vinegar to 3 cups very hot distilled water and soak for an hour, then backflush it. I put the filter in a 1 liter Nalgene bottle, then pour the above in, filling to the rim (have to keep the filter submerged), screw the top tight, and lay the bottle on its side.
