Mbali Nwoko is a South African farmer and owner of Green Terrace agribusiness. Mbali farms high value crops such as green beans, baby marrow and sweet peppers. In this interview we talk about the reality of doing business with large retailers, selling at produce markets and what it's like to be a female farmer.
Mbali tells me how she has built a profitable agribusiness, which I found fascinating because she's a new farmer. Before farming, Mbali was an executive with a Psychology degree and former owner of a recruitment firm.
This interview is longer than most of my others but that's because you'll learn a lot from Mbali. Here's some of what we talk about:
- being dictated to by retailers
- how to find the capital to buy infrastructure
- how to prioritise customers
- food processing protocols
- payment terms and staying 'liquid'
- challenges faced as a female farmer
- learning to cope with the changing climate
- using technology to scale up
Mbali can best be contacted via LinkedIn or Instagram. Search using her name or Green Terrace.
