I put a water pump on my '53 Chevy pickup, 216 engine bought at Autozone, lifetime warranty, it leaked around the backing plate. Took it back, got a new one, it leaked same place. As a mechanic for many years I took a good look at it. The bolt hole on the backing plate was drilled completely through into the coolant. Fixed that with a set screw and sealant. It still leaked!! Turns out, the tapered screws holding the plate bottomed out before the thin gasket could seal it. Countersunk the holes on the pump a little, made a new gasket, seemed to be okay for a few weeks, started leaking again!!!!!! I don't know what kind of gasket material Autozone sold me for that, but the coolant just seeped right through it, like cardboard might. Ordered the proper gasket material and, FINALLY, no leaks. Talk about frustrating, I wanted to pull my hair out, but since I don't have much anyway, that was not an option.

Thanks Eric. I have a '52 Styleline as well and it made the exact same noise. Thought the worst, but it was only the water pump. I saw your 12 volt conversion video and noticed here how quickly your car cranked over. I still have a 6 volt system, and for any of your viewers experiencing slow cranking with 6 volts, be sure you have the original/correct gauge positive and negative battery cables. Incorrect gauge cables from the local automotive parts store will result in slow or no cranking - making you mistakenly think the problem lies elsewhere.

I just got a 52 chevy stiline yesterday I drove it same knowing marbles clashing noise then it got worse and it shut off water gushing and it left me stranded had to call a tow truck. Someone said myotor is shot. I'm guessing it's just the water pump. Any idea or input please. I'd love to hear.

Great vid, Eric. My '49 Chevy was doing the same thing, sounded like marbles in a tin can. I was amazed how quickly your car started, then I saw it: a 12 volt conversion! I'll be watching more of your vids, for sure! TY for posting. Matt

Great video! I have a 62 deuce with a 194 and I thought I had the same problem. Turns out I only had a badly worn belt. Your video gives me the confidence to change the pump should it need it in the future. Its fun wrenching on these straight 6 motors!

Great video. Im just replacing my water pump as it has the wrong pulley fitted. Its interresting to note that they come in a few variations. The one I have has a 3/8 pulley.

hey man how are you? I just bought a 1950 Chevy Styleline Deluxe Sports Coupe. It has only had two previous owners. The last owner is now 75 years old and he hasnt driven the car in years. It runs and everything is good with the car. I want to change the oil and filter. it has a 216 engine 3 on the three. with the oil filter i will use FRAM C4, but i dont know what type of engine oil to use. It only has 47K original miles. What do you suggest?

The car was originally designed to use straight 30 weight oil. You could use that depending on what climate you are in or if you want to use a multi viscosity oil i would suggest Rotella 15w40 diesel oil. It's very good oil and has high levels of zinc and phosphorus which is what you want for older engines. The zinc and phosphorus is what gives the metal to metal protection for the cam and lifters.

MT offroad I live in Miami Florida and it’s hot all year long here, 98 degree all year long. Diesel engine oil you said??? Even if the car is low diesel?

@@GenerationOldschoolEspañol yep. The diesel oil has a much better additive package for internal protection. Modern cars don't need it like the older cars do. I run the synthetic Rotella in all my cars and side by sides. I did a video on the oil comparison recently. It was comparing atv oil to the diesel oil. The Rotella is wonderful stuff!

When converting from a 6 volt to 12 volt. Will it require replacing the existing wiring system

I have Pertronix on my six (about 10 years) and I have a random miss. I have done many things to get rid of it. Someone said if the plug wires are touching, they can cross fire.
