The Hawks vetted Levshunov and had plenty of time to scout him. From all accounts I've read he's a tireless worker and takes coaching well. The reason he's going to the Ice hogs this season is the Hawks want be in control of his development. I think he has the physical tools and skills to be a #1 RD but it will take a couple of years. I too wanted Demidov but that may have been shirt sighted on my part.

Good, objective video. I wanted Demidov but they drafted Levshunov. If Levshunov ultimately becomes a 27 minute a game horse with decent defensive awareness and great puck moving ability, it will be a great pick. But Vanacker is not 6'4" dude. NHL Central scouting lists Vanacker at 6'0".

Was kinda wanting them to draft Demidov and then Solberg in the 1st round. I thought that’s what they were going to do when they traded up to 18!

The Hawks don't win those cups without Keith, Seabrook, Hjalmarson, Oduya etc.

I highly recommend you look at the rinkside gm's report on him. A huge reason lev is so coveted is becausd he hasnt been developing for that long but his progression is staggering. I would have also liked demidov here but if he can develop well under a pro style system he can absolutely be that game changing #1, he just need to keep developing at the pace he has. Things like development curves arent as present in tracked data so im not suprised you arent a fan but trust me give it a chance

Yes but development curves are tracked pretty extensively at the nhl level (see Micah Blake McCurdys work in particular) and the general consensus is that defensemen peak EARLIER than forwards, and become better defensively over time but worse overall because they can’t create chances as well as they age. The perception they take longer to develop is that nhl coaches rarely trust young dmen to make mistakes no matter how good they are on offense, so if you’re expecting massive growth in Levshunov it would be counter to historical precedent (and also assumes that demidov doesn’t have untapped potential either)

@@silverdragon996 I totally agree with your thoughts on him. I believe he will be a very good top defenceman. He was allowed to freelance at MSU. He was by far the best player on his team.
