In the last year, there has been European band covering this and many other Chicago songs. They are called Leonid and Friends. There work has even caught the attention of real Chicago members.

Hi guys.... This was a very underrated Chicago album. It did go Gold and it reached #21 on the Billboard Pop album chart. The great guitarist on both Chicago 13 (from 1979) and "Hot Streets" (from 1978) is Donnie Dacus. You guys should try "Window Dreamin' " off of this album. Keep up the great work Sight After Dark!

I love the horns. I think Rufus & Chaka Khan did this song as well. I could be mistaken. I just can't sit still!! I'm always happy to stop in for a Chicago moment!❤ P.S I believe Donny Dacus was the lead guitarist then and Maynard Ferguson was a huge jazz trumpet player.

Drummer Danny Seraphine wrote this originally with his longtime writing partner David “Hawk” Wolinski for Hawk’s band “Rufus” (with Chaka Khan). Wanting to jump on the disco craze, and thinking it could be a “hot new sound for the band”, Danny submitted it to Chicago. Maynard Ferguson was brought in on trumpet because he was famous for his screaming, sustained high register and also to compete with/invite comparison to Trumpeter Herb Alpert, who was ruling the charts with his song “Rise”. Danny was crushed, as he truly believed the song would be a smash. Later, when the Bucketheads sampled the opening vocal for their hit dance club song “The Bomb”, they hadn’t bothered obtaining the rights and tried to buy them after the fact for a measly $1500. Seraphine of course refused and ended up eventually with 33 percent of the profits from the track. He says in his book that what started out as a ‘bomb’ ended up being “the biggest single of my career, go figure.”

They played this in 1980 on SNL Bill Russell episode. The new guitarist was very accomplished but not Terry whose legend only grows- deservedly. Apparently, the surviving members felt the new guy was too flashy and kicked him out. Maynard, was a screecher- but a major coup- and really nails this with other worldly chops- definitely, not just some guy. They had to be thrilled he agreed to this. I bowed out of a 10 piece band covering Chicago tunes doing my best Seraphine imitation mid- 70's, because disco was taking over. Then this tune came out. Great song. Showed they could master the genre. Even Chick Corea was throwing in disco elements in The Mad Hatter Rhapdody in 1978- but why bother? It is like overdubbing Linda McCartney on a Paul gem. You can hear that there is more capitulation than buy in on Chicago's part. Seraphine is a brilliant musician and was not known for composing, then comes up with this. Glad he got a deserved payday on his "sample sale."

When you hear this song, you have to put some things into context. First, it had not been long, since Terry Kath had passed away in January 1978. Donnie Dacus was the replacement guitar player in this song, but this would be his last recorded album and tour with them. Street Player was on Chicago 13 which was released in August 1979 and was the first Chicago album to bear no significant hit singles. Second, it was the disco era and Chicago's music went against the grain of the trend. However, this track was probably one of the best on the album. "The opening track, the disco-fueled extended jam "Street Player" was also released as a single, but it failed to chart, making it the band's first single to miss the charts altogether." Later, in 2003, Chicago 13 was remastered and reissued by Rhino Records with a B-Side, featuring Dacus's "Closer to You" (an outtake from the Hot Streets sessions), and the 12-inch single mix of "Street Player" as bonus tracks. "Street Player" did eventually reach hit status, being sampled for both the 1995 hit "The Bomb! (These Sounds Fall into My Mind)" by The Bucketheads, the 2009 hit "I Know You Want Me (Calle Ocho)" by Pitbull and the 2013 remix by dance music producer "Tradelove". Source: Chicago Wikipedia. It's still one of my favorites to hear anytime! By the way, that was Maynard Ferguson playing trumpet.

tHIS ALBUM WAS CONSIDERED A COMMERCIAL FAILURE....Donnie darcus was sacked after this album failed to have a single that performed strongly...This is my ring tone....because of the hard horns intro that I needed to hear my phone at work...I still never heard my phone...good...he speaks of a life that would grind or take down most people but he has overcome life's trials and tribulations because of his music...great song,,,. THESE SOUNDS FALL INTO MY MIND...Problem with sampling you get what Zappa calls ''death by nostalgia''...Playing 16/4 for a drummer is OK..opening the hihat on the ''and''..is not boring....playing straight 4/4 with a doof blatt doof doof Blatt is boring..

most likely due to the blind, racist ridiculous anti-disco hate that grew around the time this album was coming out. which was such a shame. that's one of the things I don't get about americans...how they tend to put music into boxes and associate it with stuff like sexual orientations, races, genders...which would then would LIMIT the appreciation of that particular music. so stoopid. music is music. you don't like a certain music cos you're gay, or you are gay..or black cos you like a particular type of music..or song. you just like what you like...I like what I like. Period. the rest is just so dvmb.

The most suicidal piece of musical version ever had since "Fancy Colors". But this time this shows us that a bunch of hippies roaring their motorcycle as from the side of the beach waves on the road waves in driving their way through that ocean beach waves as a plan as for a suicidal purpose of drowning themselves by means of.driving themselves in drowning themselves to death.

If this track is representative of the album's style I can see why it was a flop. Not disco enough to appeal to the disco crowd but disco enough to really piss off Chicago fans. Shoutout to Steve Dahl - I hope this album was in that pile of disco records he so famously blew up!!!

@@SightAfterDark If you don't know Steve Dahl it would be worthwhile to look him up. He was quite a character. The blowing up of records I mentioned was part of Disco Demolition Night, an explosive (literally) promo stunt that took place in '79 at Comiskey Park in Chicago.

This song was NOT an indication of what the rest of the album sounded like- disco was big at the time and this was Chicago's attempt to get on the disco charts. I have to say that this was a very "musical" disco tune however...
