I can't grasp the purpose of this piece. It exposes the sinister thinking of the West establishment. They worry China does things right, where China helps Global South to improve their infrastructure (e.g. broadband and transportation) so that the economies in Global South can thrive. In other words, the West doesn't care about improving Global South but only control of it. On the other hand, China doesn't discriminate and Huawei equipment has helped improving broadband in rural U.S. Last time I checked, broadband in rural U.S. is deteriorating due to Huawei ban as there's no affordable replacement.

And China has never started a hot war with anyone for almost 40 years. Why would middle eastern countries like to do business with China? and distant themselves from US? Just see what US has done to the region in the past 50 years. It is remarkably tragic.
@swhaster

The Monroe Doctrine was about the sphere of influence in terms of colonization and politics more so than trade. I suppose trade and business deals may at some point converge with politics, but China didn't coerce any of these Latin American countries to do business. These countries simply chose a better deal with China. If the US is losing its grip on Latin America, it's because China is offering a better deal than America. Isn't the free market one of the tenets of the US? Then there is a long history of countless US-fomented coups and political meddlings as well as generally patronizing attitudes toward these developing nations which left a bad taste and didn't help the matter for America. All the previous empires and the current American empire, which is no exception, are about territorial expansion as well as wealth extraction aka theft, be it commodities or humans, either through proxies or military might. Except for Ethiopia, Africa as a continent has been wholly ravaged and exploited by the collective West for centuries and it still hasn't been set free from neocolonialism through puppet regimes. Because of this long history of Western exploitation of Africa, painting China as the exploiter of Africa is quite laughable. I find the characterization of China and the general undertone of this conversation to be filled with schadenfreude, hypocritical, and patronizing, with a lot of projections and glossing over monumental atrocities of Western imperialism and military aggressions that are still creating havoc with its reverberating effects, whether it be in Africa, the Middle East, or the Asia Pacific, well, virtually everywhere. Then again, I suppose the American chauvinism of this talk is to be expected from Americans. And, yes, that is your right, Goldman, however delusional.

Why is the deputy editor of “Asia Times” an American? Shouldn’t it be someone from the biggest and most influential country from Asia, i.e. a thinker from China? We’re sick and tired of seeing Asia through an American lens and mindset. China accumulates $1T of trade balance each year. Rather than handing over its hard earned money to Washington in buying up more US debts or investing in US assets, it has wisely chosen to use the money to help other developing countries. It’s a noble vision. And, of course, it will benefit in the long term as well by developing new markets for trade. In contrast, the US has never been interested in helping others. Rather it has used its power to benefit itself and fixated in making other countries in its own image. And, of course, it is addicted to fighting forever wars. It is constantly creating division, chaos and conflicts around the world. The speaker unapologetically stated: “I don’t worry about what China does wrong; what worries me is what China does right.” Such is the narrow-mindedness and pettiness of the mindset of the typical American elite class. These people would wish the worst on others so as to lift themselves. No sense of common good and well-being for humanity as a whole. In the speaker’s mind, China is sub human. Well, I have no time for people like that.

David has a very impartial idea of Chinese history and culture. Lots of Chinese dynasties were started by rural revolts and even CPC succeeded through grassroot rural support. Confucius is all about good governance to satisfy people's needs. China's agricultural reform between 1978 and 1983 was started in a village. At the time, the village head essentially violated the collectives farming policy by experimenting household-based farming. The central government later adopted that reform. In the U.S., people can have opinions but nothing gets done. Out of 300 million Americans, Trump and Biden are the choices for the leadership. That says everything about the system.

China helps the global south's develop itself. The US has been thinking more along the lines of how to exploit and control them. But self-interest is a strong force, so most countries prefer the Chinese approach. The win-win concept is a strong one! If this is allowed to progress, the global South will prosper! But someone doesn't like that, so watch out, and introduce laws against foreign agents. Countries with resources might look at what Norway did with their oil resources, as a recept for how to not squander them to foreign companies.

The great fallacy of Western analysis is the constant assumption that Western methods are the only pathways! In the immediate future, China does not care about capital flows (speculative or otherwise) as applied in the Western paradigm, i.e. credit agencies. China cares about constructing a system of trade that is not exclusively $dollar-based. Unlike the US, China does not care if partner-trade countries seek to balance fiscal deficits by borrowing in $dollars. It does not seek control over their economic behaviour or indeed their ideology, it simply doesn't care. It cares exclusively about economic well-being (theirs and itself, in that the former enables the latter) above all considerations. From the outside looking in, the Western financial system has the appearance of a system of shuffling exaggerated amounts of money, printed willy-nilly, among allied European states and the US. This money is usually underpinned by nothing but speculative froth (see Nvidia's $trillion valuation). It also weighs lightly on developed Western States (with near-zero rates of interest) and weighs heavily on developing countries (with risk premium-charged interest rates). In fact, every fault Mr Goldman ascribes to Chinese capital markets is also a fault of Western capital, except perceptions are heavily controlled by an army of Western analysts. China seeks to think outside the box, and through mutually agreed swap lines it provides developing countries with a means to balance their current accounts and tackle import-exchange rate-induced inflation. These are powerful economic variables (for developing countries) that feed into their overall macroeconomic stability. For a hypothetical example, if Zambia's goods imports can be totally satisfied by Chinese imports (and its infrastructure requirements by Chinese development finance, BRI) which are then supplemented by the trade credits provided by PBOC currency swap lines, then why would Zambia need to borrow $dollars directly from the IMF, World Bank or Western commercial banks. This disinflationary effect of (trade credits for) Chinese goods in turn would enable the Zambian government to effectively raise domestic capital to meet fiscal requirements, i.e. increase non-inflationary money supply because of the entry into the domestic market of additional Chinese goods. Why would Zambia need $dollars? Why would Zambia endure the environmental degradation of mining; to obtain dollars that it doesn't need for imports? This is what Western analysts are not seeing, while the West plays paper financial games measuring economic utility in currency values and volumes, China is thinking differently. And my hypothetical example is being played out in the real world by two countries namely Argentina and Russia. The former has had to crawl back begging Beijing for the restoration of swap lines without which its attempts to control inflation would be socially divisive and thus futile. Argentina did not run to the US for more paper currency. In the second case Russia, all attempts by the entire Western bloc to sanction and cut off Russia from their controlled markets have failed, why? Because the entry into the Russian market of Chinese goods has not only displaced the need for Western goods, it has also ameliorated the requirement for Western capital to finance those goods. The effect for Sino-Russian bilateral trade has been an explosive growth to $250 billion, all outside the Western financial and trading networks. In turn, Russia is growing in better terms than any of the sanctioning states, thus illustrating a working paradigm. The Russian paradigm loosely translated for the global South makes nonsense of $dollar dominance. Does Russia care how many $trillions are shuffled between New York, London, and Tokyo? It doesn't; the only thing in my opinion saving the $dollar, is understandable Chinese timidity! After all, anyone winning in a casino playing blackjack would be loathed to move (unless forced to by the Casino's management, re: the US) to risk their luck by playing (a different game) the roulette wheel. In this overall scenario, the Western capitalist game becomes a parody, significant and important only to its players; thus bearing similarity to the famous cartoon character 'Wile E. Coyote, who doesn't realise he has overrun a cliff but keeps running underpinned by nothing but air - in the Western case, a financial paperchase and the hot air of bloviating western analysts.
@henli-rw5dw
2 ай бұрын
No. It's not Chinese timidity. The reason is because China wants to maintain trade with the West. All business is good business, and when it trades it accumulates massive trade surplus in dollar. It can't convert the surplus back to Yuan, else Yuan will appreciate and that will hurt export. So what do you do? Almost half of BRI loans are in dollar denominated loans to developing countries. So China keeps the dollar because it wants to use the dollar.
@henli-rw5dw
2 ай бұрын
This is also why it wants to trade in other currencies. Since China always accumulates surplus, it doesn't want an excess of dollar surplus. That's too much dollar risk. So it's in China's interest to trade in other currencies whenever possible so not to have a massive accumulation of dollar surplus. China actually doesn't want yuan to be the dominant currency because it doesn't want yuan to appreciate too much in value.

The West has not grown out as yet of its colonial mentality, based on conquer, which implies military, economic, and soft power wars. That strategy has failed, causing serious damage to Western interests in the World, including within its societies. China has adopted the approach of a well equiped, and financed helper, or handyman, who stick to the limits of the scope of its role, while aiming at a long term objective of becoming a shareholder in the countries economy, and even chairman of the board.

On demographic issues...the west is also facing the same issues where the population is aging. The west resolves this issue by creating conflicts so targeted nations face extreme poverty and the west looks like a heavenly place. So migration is encouraged and even planned by the west to obtain cheap labor that the union has no control over. Meanwhile, China resolves their problem by investing in and deployment of robots and AI.
