I am using the Vevor diesel heater in my greenhouse and it uses about a gallon of diesel per night to keep it from freezing on me. But I have the temperature set at 70 degrees F. Somehow though the heater controls are off by 20 degrees so it holds at about 50 which works for growing veggies.

My favorite quote from this video is: "does it sip fuel? Barely touch any? No! It gives you the energy that diesel stores." nice to hear someone else say it too. The energy in the fuel you use, less the inefficiencies of the tool or process you're using to extract energy. Doesn't matter if your burning cracked corn, wood, diesel or coal. There is only so much energy in each fuel.

great video. Ive just bought one of these heaters, to heat both of my sheds at same time... Built a waterproof wooden box for the heater to be housed in.. Along with a 25L tank... 2x 12v leisure batteries in parallel for extra capacity, and a cheap ebay solar charge controller, and a 100w 12v solar panel.... The heater is boxed around the back of the sheds, so it cant be heard etc... and i bought a dual heat pipe adaptor, to feed into both of my sheds (right next to eachother).. then cut and extended the wiring for the display/control, so that is mounted on the wall in the shed... I have it set on thermostat control, and have it so it keeps both sheds around 20c... Not cold, But not hot... Just comfortable to be in.... I live in the middle of nowhere aswell.. So red diesel is easily obtained for me... So its very cheap and efficient to run...

Good to see a video about one of these units that has been in service for years. I have been burning some waste oil in mine and it only lasted 2 days before having to be cleaned out. I suspected that this was because of the nasty fuel and hypothesized that it would be fine on diesel. I get 14 hrs on 4 litres of fuel at the mid (3) setting. Not to be too critical, but using the BTU of the fuel is not a great way to calculate or compare this unit to a electric heater, because a substantial amount of heat goes out the exhaust / outside. A electric heater is 100% efficient (basically) as all 1500 watts gets turned into heat that transfers into your work area. I'm not recommending a electric heater, just stating the facts. I believe that calculating the fuel energy is how the manufacturers determine the KW rating on these things, but it is not at all practical. Just like in a car, you don't calculate HP based on fuel energy.

FYI, that setting is not kilowatts, that setting is Hz. That's how many pulses the pump makes per second. The pump delivers .02ml per stroke. If you have it set to 2hz, that's dosing .02ml, two times per second; or .04ml per second. Which works out to 144ml (.144 liters) per hour. .144 liters per hour of diesel is 1.53 kW per hour, or 5226 BTUs. At a max frequency of 5.5hz, your heater is capable of 4.21 kW, or 14,371 BTU.

Make life easy. Just stick a tube in the 5 gallon can or even use a plastic drum. Also the tank can be below the heater. Side note each pulse of the pump is 0.022 milliliter of fuel. And the hz you are setting from 1.8 to 5.5 is the pulses per second.
@FRUGALWITHJOHN
Жыл бұрын
Thanks for the reply, not all pumps give you 0.022 ML, some more and some less. 2 HZ on mine gives me around 2 KW. (Around 0.160 liters/hour, more of less, usually more) Yes not quite 2 KW but close enough. I buy my Diesel in the summer because it's cheaper and has more stored energy, (not the winter mix) so it will gel if left out in the cold. I don't have a good spot to put a 5 gallon can to feed the heater. Below the tank is where I have my battery's (booster packs and others off the floor on plywood. When all the math is done I get close to KW as it shows in HZ. Thanks for watching.
@johncollinsgrove1750

@@FRUGALWITHJOHN spec on these pumps is .022 mil per pulse. So math for 2hz. .022 x 2 pulses per second gives you .044 per second. .044 x 60 seconds in a minute is 2.64 milliliters per minute. 2.64 milliliters pre minute x 60 minutes in an hour gives you 158.4 milliliters in 1 hour. Long story short the people who did there homework calculated that these Chinese heaters are far far far off from there ratings in terms of KW output meaning the so called 8kw version cranks out on max setting like 4.2kw heat but a big portion go,s trough the exhaust so from the 8kw on paper only 3,5 real KW heat are cranked out on max setting.. Not sure of the size of your garage, or its insulation situation, but would be curious to know if the heater(at maximum setting)can keep it comfortable when outside temp is around freezing. Here's more info on fuels I've tried in the UK spec Vevo 5kW unit, with stock settings (with the controller-new type, late 2022, without the antenna signal indicator): Best fuel, most heat, Kerosene=heating oil=jetA1=paraffin Diesel, red or standard next best Brake fluid, DOT3 diluted with 10% petrol next best Old dirty engine oil diluted 20% with unleaded petrol next best Transmission fluid/old gearbox oil diluted with 10% petrol next (but smelly) Old gunwash thinners with 10% old engine oil to give it some lube properties not very good Old petrol with 10% old engine oil, also not very good. Acetone, brake and clutch cleaner (trichloroethylene- don't breath the smoke at all) or alcohol/meths don't really work at all. With all of the hydrocarbons, it is pretty obvious that there is way too much air running through the combustion chamber, because the exhaust pipe gets really hot (wasted heat). If the combustion air inlet is choked a little, while still maintaining a lean and clean burn (at max fan speed), the exhaust temp drops while the heat exchanger actually gets a lot hotter. More time for the hot combustion gases to transfer the heat into the heat sink, as the gas is moving slower. Oh and throw away the little fuel filter they supply, as it doesn't filter anything! Get a proper fuel filter... If anyone knows how to crack advanced settings on the new controller unit (without antenna signal indicator), please post! 👍🏻😀🇬🇧

The controller should have two settings: thermostat mode and the pulse rate mode. I'm pulse rate mode has nothing to do with the wattage. It's the frequency the dosing pump fires at. That's why the display says "Hz" when you set it. Does your controller say something other than "Hz" when you're changing that setting? I've heard that pump is supposed to output 0.02 mL per pump, and if you are using 2 Hz, then that works out to 0.67 L over a period of 5.5 hours, which is less than you're saying it's using, so maybe yours is different. My 5 kW heater can go as high as 5.5 Hz and as low as 1.6 Hz. After almost two years my heater is dying. It didn't sound great day 1, and now the bearings are noisy as hell! I don't trust it any more, so I'm shopping for a replacement. Thanks for the links! The electric fuel pump is a neat item. I might have to get one of those to make it easier to fill my tank.
@FRUGALWITHJOHN

Mine does say HZ, It goes from 1.8 to 5.5 to make life simple I say 1HZ = 1 KW, When you do the math it works out extremely close, but not exact. Of course it also depends where and when you buy your diesel, not all diesel has the same stored energy. (in the summer it has more stored energy) If you buy your diesel in a warmer state and try to drive north to a cold province your diesel will gel. (winter = less stored energy). Good luck with your new heater and thanks for watching.
@ModestJoke

Hmmm. Turns out it is very close. Still, I'm surprised you didn't explain that in the video. It's cool that I learned it now, but it would have saved me a lot of time and math if you had simply explained what you were talking about in your video. :D BTW, I edited my comment. May math was bad. A 2 Hz pumping rate is only 0.67 L over 5.5 hours.

Excellent video John, thanks for putting that together. I’m curious why you are pulling in outside air for combustion vs just using air ambient air from the garage? I’m thinking both the extra work/cost of another thru hole fitting in the door and efficiency of heating warmer air as the garage temp goes up.

Don't hate, I actually run one in my 20' ×30' car and a half garage, and I can tell you this,,, I live in Ontario, it gets cold here and damp, my garage is detached and made of 8" concrete block, basic wood roof with 1 roof vent that I keep open, absolutely no insulation, no vapour barrier either, I only heat the garage on the weekend, I pretty much live out there all weekend, Friday to Monday morning when I have to go to work, I put a small woodstove in and lifted it about 8" of the ground, I run the woodstove Friday afternoon, and I run it HOT, until about 9 or 10 pm, when the block walls feel just warm, I shut the stove down and fire up my 5kw vevor 😂 and I run it on high right till Monday morning at 5am, then I shut it down, and I always make sure it's running on high or maximum for atleast 1 hr before shutting it down, it's very important, also ppl, you do have to consider your location and exhaust, it all makes a difference on performance and fuel consumption, these units are engineered to be inside and intake ambient heat, if it's outside and pulling really cold air from outside, your losing efficiency right off the hop, Wich means your fuel rate is going out the window and will never be consistent, I played around with mine quite a bit, and did alot of research, I recommend keeping the unit atleast 3' off the ground and run it on high, and only burn good clean diesel in it, oh yeah, don't forget to get a air monitor 😂

You can set Temp or BTU, but It does not turn off, when it is set to temp and the temperature is met it will continue to produce heat at its lowest setting. I don't use the temperature setting, but I don't think you can set it as low as 35 F. (not the best heater for your application)
@Wrenchmonkey1

Look into the Afterburner controller for these things. They're about $100 US shipped, and they can be set up with a 'defrost' function that will fire up the heater at a specified temp, run it and then shut the heater down when a specified temp is reached. The startup cycle is about 5 minutes, and the shutdown takes another 3 minutes or so. So there's a minimum cycle time of 7(ish) minutes. Most likely depending on your set points, and how well insulated the space is, and how large it is, etc, that wouldn't be a problem. As long as your power bank doesn't mind a little extra power consumption to run the glow plug during the startup sequence, it's a good way to go. And depending on how well the heat is retained, you may consume less energy overall due to the fan not having to be run during the times that the heater is shut down.

If you use a torch, light a match in the garage, you are using inside air for combustion - If the inside air has gasoline vapors in it, it could explode or start a fire. They do make other voltages for power on these heaters so that you can run them off your service voltage or whatever is convenient. Takes a battery out of the equation. Batteries have a limited recharge life and are getting expensive. They might be worth it if you live in an area with frequent and long power outages. A rated power supply might also be a way around the battery and would allow you to have a standby battery (last much longer as it is not in normal use) for power outages.
