Hey gang! Leave it to me to completely drop the ball on identifying yet another chord. LOL So...the "Bdimb6" I mentioned in Invincible makes no sense whatsoever, and my only defense here is that I was working on some dim7 (b6/b13) arps/chords this morning, so somehow that terminology found its way into this lesson. :\ That chord is a G7 with no third - not a Bdim anything. I was also MEGA-distracted changing the albums beside throughout the lesson. I couldn't relax when I made this one. Sorry folks - mistakes happen, and I totally made another one there. ROCK ON! :)

Mega TOOL fan here-thanks for covering this! I was in a TOOL tribute band some years ago, shortly after the release of “10,000 Days.” What I find interesting about AJ’s riffs are that they’re so often based around the minor pentatonic. Yet another example of how much can be squeezed out of just five notes. Of course, I’m not inside Adam’s head, but my guess is that he isn’t thinking in terms of chord names (e.g., here’s a Dsus2/F) as much as he’s trying to weave some interesting and novel pattern from a string of notes. He’s like a spider weaving a beautiful web on the fretboard. Thanks for the lesson! 🤘🏻

What is the time signature on "The Patient" and "Third Eye"? I have hard time identifying time signatures eventhough I can play them even complex ones. Thanks Dave! 👍🎸 Also "Invincible" - time signature? Just wondering. Makes it interesting! P.S. I never listened to Tool other than the songs on the radio. I recently ran into videos featuring the drummer Danny Carey and what an incredible musician he is! So I'm going look into them now! 👍🎸

Tool is a very special band. They have a vision that melds all kinds of extraordinary ideas from their members into unique songs. Compositionally they often move a riff from guitar to bass to drums to vocals in brilliant fashion. Thanks so much for fleshing some of these riffs out-they are deceptively difficult, especially when you’re repeating odd time signature riffs endlessly. Btw I always thought of Tool as “angry Rush” 😛

I think they were much better with Paul D'Amour playing bass. After that, they got too "artsy". They used to rock. Opiate was a jamming album.

Thanks, it's interesting to hear you discuss and explain Tool riffs, usually they're very much a specialist channel thing. I understand from the band interviews that they write the instrumental music together (Jones, Chancellor and Carey) and sometimes trade bass and guitar riffs; perhaps this explains in part the originality and very rythmic nature of the riffs.

I’m working on my solo album and I want to take some tracks out of 4/4 but I run into this thing where everything I do just reminds me of Tool when I leave 4/4 unless I play a shuffle which is fine for my one country song but not so much the harder rock stuff. My eternal question: How can I play in 6 or 7/8 with out reminding myself of Tool? Help!

Tool is a brilliant band ... but I can't listen to their music for extended periods because there isn't enough contrast between the different songs and that makes me feel exhausted when listening for an extended period. I do love the unique sound and the music, just not too much in one listening session.

Hi David, this is one of the coolest guitar channels on KZitem. Thanks for doing what you do here. Not sure if you listen to many Canadian bands but a couple of my favorite ones are Chilliwack and Headpins. If you dig in you will find that these 2 bands are connected. Multi instrumentalist Brian "Too Loud" MacLeod was is both bands and had a big influence in the later Chilliwack sound. The Chilliwack song Trial by Fire is a good example of his killer rock guitar work and I think is one of the best guitar intros ever. He formed Headpins and it was his vehicle for some straight ahead rock music. Unfortunately we lost Brian but his music lives on. Cheers Bro !!
