That is definitely Michael McDonald. No one else sounds like him. He sings four lines in this song and really adds his special magic. And that is Christopher Cross doing the AMAZING guitar solo at the end as well.

Cross was the shit when he hit the airwaves. He could do no wrong. His sound was different, mellow, easy going lyrics, superb instrumental backup. His music stands the test of time. I hear him everyday on the internet radio channels I listen to.

Cross was the first artist in Grammy history to win all four general field awards in a single year, 1981. He won record of the Year, album of the year , song of the year, and best new artist of the year. This record was not broken for 39 years. He also won Best Arrangement Accompanying Artist for "Sailing." He went platinum 5 times in the US. His music is timeless.

Am I the only one who thinks it’s pretty amazing when highly accomplished artists like Michael McDonald do back-up vocals for a younger, up and coming artist? It just seems like the ultimate compliment! I know The Bee Gees, Micheal Jackson, Glenn Frye, Prince, and many others have lent their vocals to younger artists’ songs. Very cool 😎

This WAS the song we put in our cassette player... put the top down on our car, and just cranked the volume up and hit the road to go to Oceanside. We would play this cassette over and over..... good memories. Ty for bringing them back. ♡

Thanks for bringing Christopher Cross back to my mind. That's what we listened and danced to in the 80s. Steely Dan, Gerry Rafferty etc. I would never recognized another singer. I though the ba king singer was Christopher Cross himself. Well spotted!

I remember hearing this song when it first came out and I reacted the same way about Michael McDonald! This song has so many layers! With “Say You’ll Be Mine”, “Never Be The Same” and of course “Sailing”, it’s no wonder it got so many accolades when it came out!!! Again, you’re finding all the great music!!! 80s suggestion, Level 42 - Something about you I appreciate a kindred spirit. Im an 80s baby with a 50s/60s baby soul. I consume music like chips, all genres. This is an all time song for me and Michael in the truth. I hope I come across more of my favs here.
