@@lreadlResurrected He has a self-deprecating sense of humor, too, and doesn't take himself all that seriously. :-) The last time I saw him, in between songs he talked about the "box set" of his work that his record label had just released, and added that "In the music business, that's sort of like getting your gold watch; it's your label telling you 'Okay, you've done your service, you're retired, now go away." :-D And then just before he and Nachmanoff played "Year of the Cat" (which they did about halfway into his set, after they'd done a bunch of songs from his earlier catalogue), he told the audience "Okay, I'll take pity on you and play a song you've actually heard of now."

Al Stewart was born in Glasgow, Scotland and his musical origin was England. The album Year of the Cat was Al’s seventh album in England and his third album in America. It followed Modern Times which nibbled its way to the top 30 and this album ended up being his most popular. For the song Year of the Cat, it came about when Al was on tour opening for Linda Ronstadt in 1975. At that time, Al had hired a piano player named Peter Wood and at each of the sound checks, Peter would play this riff which was the opening riff to Year of the Cat. Al said to him, “You know, I think this could be a song. Would you like me to put some words to it?” Peter said, “Sure.” At the time, Al had a girlfriend who was reading a book on Vietnamese astrology and she came upon a chapter called the Year of the Cat. So Al had the title but not the lyrics yet. So, he wrote a set of lyrics and got nowhere, then he wrote an entirely new song called Foot of the Stage about a British comedian named Tony Hancock who had committed suicide and gave that up because nobody in America had heard of Tony Hancock. So he went back to Year of the Cat and while he was staying at a hotel in America, he noticed that the TV was going to show the classic 1942 movie, Casablanca. After that, inspiration hit and he wrote the song about lost lovers in Africa. As for the saxophone solo, it was suggested by Al’s producer Alan Parsons of The Alan Parsons Project who had produced not only the song but the entire album. Some other songs of Al’s that I recommend are Roads to Moscow, Red Toupee, On the Border, If it Doesn’t Come Naturally Leave it, Night Train to Munich, Joe the Georgian, The Black Danube, Katherine of Oregon, Under a Wine Stained Moon and Antarctica. If you like hearing Year of the Cat, you should watch a video where Al talks about the stories behind all the songs on the album Year of the Cat.

I've always LOVED this song, from the very first time I heard it. This excels at creating the mood he was going for - that mysterious romance inspired by 'Casablanca' and 'The Maltese Falcon'. The solo is incredible: it starts with the cello, then acoustic guitar, then electric guitar, then finally that soaring sax solo! Genius! Thanks for this. He wasn't as big in the US as his native UK, and his other hit in the US was 'Time Passages'. Good song, not quite as good as this, but definitely worth a listen. Be well, stay safe. Peace from SF P.S. Maybe you can get around to listening to Yes sometime soon? Start with some of their earlier stuff, probably 'Roundabout' first or 'I've Seen All Good People'. Thanks!

Thank you so much for reacting to Al Stewart's Year of the Cat. Whenever I was driving in the night and this song came on the radio, I would park my car and just sit back and listen.

Oh, wow!! Haven’t heard this in ages. Great stoner music from my early post college days. The lyrics, the instrumentals are so perfect. Too bad so many musicians these days ignore the power of the sax. Wonderful reaction, thank you!

I was 17 in the UK when this came out. I find it brilliant to see your reaction, because it is the same one we had 44 years ago. This obviously appealed to your sense of taste. Such poetry and music. So pleased to see your genuine appreciation. Forget 'in-vogue' music. Go for the timeless stuff. Many thanks.

I remember dancing to this song back then, in the town "Roa del Duero" in Spain during the "fiestas". The girl was Maria, a Med student from Burgos. Always makes me remember!

Yes "Time Passages" may be even better. Also, This reminds me of Joe Jackson's "Is she really going out with him." Another great Brit from the 70's and 80"s.

You have a feel for the music, Jay. When you close your eyes to listen, you know the music has you. This stopped me in my tracks when it hit the radio back when. There are a pretty good handful of his works for you to find. Look forward to watching you take the journey.
