Thank you so much Mark for all your guidance. We got mine running yesterday. If I can do it anyone can, never would have known where or how to do it and of course a picture is worth a thousand words. 1978 Chrysler 140

Hey, wanted to drop you a note, thanks for doing the Chrysler outboard videos. I have a 707H, 1973 70hp that ran great for years and wouldn't start last year at the dock. Backfiring and popping, it seemed the timing wasn't right. I have a manual that I used, but remembering this video I watched over the winter, that put it all together with the multimeter. I found that spot where I got continuity turning the flywheel, locked the nut down and it fired up. This old girl has 125 psi in 3 cylinders, never opened up, pushes a 1976 Star Craft Super Sport on Lake Erie for walleye. Thanks for the help.

These videos u made on the 105 is it the same for the 120? I just got a 1976 ski boat but I was told that that 120 is not original im getting fire to the plugs but I can't get it to bust off and when I bring the number one up this mark o| lines up with the I on the timing tab is that right?

Hi, my Chrysler 75 hp has a sticker on the flywheel. One end says TDC and the other is 32*, and about 4 lines between these two positions labeled “timing”. My manual is different than what I have. So….. TDC and distributor pulley “T” is lined up. But where do I put the tab on the sticker to fire plug #1?? Appreciate your help! Thank you

Hello there I got a 105 and runs perfect but hard to start after warm up so I think is the idle mixture screw needs to be adjusted, my question is do the engine had to be in water in forward gear because that's what the manual says
@MostlyInteresting

Yes that is the best way. I do it in a test barrel. The low speed mixture screws should be set between 3/4 and 1-1/4 turns. Tighter than that and you can lean seize the motor up. Is its out of that range the tiny passages behind the needle are likely stopped up.

I'm going to try that this weekend My problem is that when the outboard is cold starts good but after running for few minutes is hard to get it to start and when it does sometimes dies when I put it in gear

Do you think that can be my problem some times when start at first time idles really low then die then I use the throttle advance to get it running again

Hello there Thanks to you I got my 105 running right, but now I'm thinking on a electric fuel pump conversion, do you think is possible doing it with out any issues???
@MostlyInteresting
4 жыл бұрын
Do not use an electric fuel pump. The carbs only get 2-3 psi. but more importantly there is no way to do it safely. At least without a lot of complication. You need a way to kill the pump if the motor otherwise quits running. No easy way to do that here. Rebuild kits are readily available and cheap.

Great video. Its gotten dark here so I gave up and decided to watch some vids on timing. This saves me from having to muck around with setting TDC and the likes on my own. As for the photo interrupter, it is not an incandescent globe!!! I got my engine with a blown unit, so I built a 'preamp' myself... which necessitated that I tare the old one apart. It is definitely an IR LED and you can test for its operation by looking at it thru a cell phone camera. If you see a purple light , it works. Also, the output should definitely be between 0 and 12 volts. If it isn't, it means that the transistors on the photo interrupter are failing.

scrfce123 Mine is definitively a lamp. I suspect at some point they switched to LEDs. It measures like a lamp with no difference in resistance measured both ways. It is going to get replaced with a sensor out of a old disk drive soon. I am not waiting for it to fail completely and leave me sitting.

mweverett I just got mine started tonight. The carbs are leaky and the water pump is junk, but it runs. Wow. I didn't even know that it was possible to use an incandescent globe for position sensing. Amazing. Unfortunately, the Magnapower CDI unit likes its input signals to arrive processed (as a 12V peak, square wave). I believe that most optically triggered CD units (the Crane XR700 comes to mind) have built in signal generators so you need their photo interrupters and their CD modules to get it running properly. I'd be happy to share a schematic of the sensor that I constructed with you- though it isn't exactly a proven quantity as of yet. Cost me $15 in parts to construct. A lot better than the $150 odd AUD that CDI charge for their 'preamp' units.

scrfce123 I am in the process of 'fixing' my pickup also. It was flaky and though it worked, the voltage would drop as it got warm or the wind would blow. :) I removed the guts out of the plastic housing. That was fun! :( Thanks but my 'thing' is electronics so I will roll my own.

so if i cant get mine to spark from the distributor and i dont have the eye sensor then do i just replace the points and condenser? it ran good then went to start it after a water pump replacement to check it was pumping and gears would shift but it wont start and it seems i don't get spark at the plugs? can you help? i have the 1973 85hp motor

Will the starter run? If not the shifting linkage is likely not in neutral, so the starter block switch is open.

Hi, Great Video. I've been working on a 78 115HP and having a bit of a problem getting it timed. Been using your videos as a template for the way to do it, my issue is, the signal coming out of the trigger side is always at 12volts no matter how much I adjust that screw connecting the distributor to the tower shaft. Any idea why that might be? We have our Voltmeter set to DC, 20v and less to read.
@MostlyInteresting

Ryan Schleicher Does it run as it is now? The timing could be way off. Rotate the flywheel and see if you get 4 hi low changes in one revolution.

mweverett It Does. In fact we've been on the lake a few times with it already this year. Just never felt right about the timing though not getting it to be where I think it needs to be. We have the privilege of the sticker you referenced in the earlier video on top of the flywheel. We've been able to verify that TDC appears to be correct utilizing a screw driver in the #1 plug hole and making marks on it to get it's highest point. We have the Seloc book and according to that our 115HP is just like your 105, 32 degrees. We have the 32 degree mark right on the sticker, so I line that up with the pointer mark/tab bolted onto the block, turn key on, wide open throttle with stop against the block, but like I said, no matter the adjustment of that screw, I can't get it to be at zero, it's always at 12V. That curved line embedded ontop the distributor that's supposed to be running along the edge of the flywheel looks correct, if that was off, would that cause this problem? Could it possibly be adjusting it a degree or two closer to TDC might make the difference? I'll go spin it tonight and let you know if I notice any drops.

Ryan Schleicher Yes if the Distributor is not timed to the flywheel it might run soso but the timing will be off. If its off way advanced that is a motor ruining bad thing.

mweverett Just an update. Rotated the flywheel last evening, no four hi/low charges were noticed. Thought that was weird. Took the distributor cap off to look for damage inside the cap and noticed that there was a bad connection coming off the trigger lead that connects to the white/black wire lead on the spark side of the distributor. I fixed that, secured all leads, re-synced the distributor to the flywheel at TDC, rotated flywheel to 32 degrees, and the timing set without an issue. Did the ol' bet wiggle trick, and it seems to be just about right. Hit the key, boat fired right up. Gonna hit the lake later with it today to see how she runs. If you ever get some time, could you possibly make a video that shows going through the carbs? Or is there one already? Thanks again.

also you didn't show in video so when you set it that set screw is it firing at that moment or is it ur setting it just about to figre and then when u touch the belt its supposed to fire on both sides of the belt?? and you talk about 36 and 32 degrees which one? i have decal on mine and it points 32 with a semi half decent arrow so id set it there?
@MostlyInteresting

As I mentioned, the advance depends on the year and which HP motor you have. Less is safer...might make a tiny bit less power. More is asking for a blown engine.
@MostlyInteresting

You touch one side of the belt and the signal goes high. The other, back low. If you are set on the timing marks on the flywheel and you have the throttle is wide open and the link is set dead on.

when you set it at 32 did you take the belt off and reset the distributor to that mark?
@MostlyInteresting
5 жыл бұрын
No. You sync the distributor to the flywheel using the arc and line on the distributor pulley and the 0 mark on the flywheel. Then the 32 degrees or what ever your model calls for, will be in the range of the link adjustment.

Its a 1976 105, am not sure what to do, I rebuilt the carbs, set the idle screws to 1 1/8 out, float adjusted level to carb face, cleaned carb soaked them for two days in carb cleaner and blew it out with air compressor, all the linkages is set where it should be, timing adjusted 5/8 out, belt as you said, timing mark is at 0 with distributor mark and plug 1 piston out as you said, there is spark to all 4 new plugs (Champion UL18V), I don't have a vote reader so I have not check those setting, new gas and oil, no gas leaks and gas is flowing to carbs and filling the bowls, all new 5/16 gas holes, it acks like it wants to start but won't, oh I notice the oil I used is 2 cycle does that matter? I just don't know what to do now, I sure appreciate your help..
