If you watch Chuck use this in his fights, he ducks his hips down and back first to load up. This also lets him squeeze his body closer to the pocket when he throws follow up shots. What a legend of the sport.

I've never been in a cage fight, but I do train in Muay Thai, Ju-Jitsu & Wrestling because I'm a huge fan of MMA & it keeps me fit. I've tries the over hand right in a street fight with a guy who was apparently a boxer who'd never been knocked out, he was asleep within a second of it landing, awesome punch!!

You can hurt your arm swinging like that. Chuck Liddell has just been lucky that he hasnt hurt his, that I know of. If you bend your elbow just a little more rather then keeping straight like he's showing, then your chances of getting hurt are very slim & the punch will be way more powerful.

If you watch the angle at which he throws it, it's not hitting them in the forehead or the skullcap. It looks like it aims to be a temple shot which is fairly devastating. Overall though, it does look to be a punch that is easy to see coming as an experienced fighter and it does also appear to leave you really open if you miss, but that's the case with most power shots.
@GetDamage

yeah, but the over hand right can be set up by feinting a left hook to the body or fake a leg takedown to drop your opponent's guard. Plus, it's a power shot. sometimes it can break the guard or goes right over it.

Liddell had amazing accuracy. He could come over the top of a person's guard and catch them on the eye. The eye and orbital bone is the weakest part of the face. You catch a guy there with Liddell's power and precision, he's going down. He proved this in his prime. Sure he got knocked out a lot in his later days, but his age and unorthodox low guard caught up to him. He didn't have the speed or reflexes to defend himself from a low guard.

The thing that you people have to realize is that it looks totally tellographed watching someone throw that, but for the person standing directly in front of him it is actually quite deceptive, kind of like a pitcher hidding a baseball. And since fighters aren't used to seeing such a severe "overhand" right they kind of freeze like a deer in the headlights, like what the heck is that?...WHAM!

Having been in the infantry, boxed in the army, fought international kyokushin and worked 20 years + in security I think I`m reasonably qualified to know what I`m talking about. Read what I wrote carefully. I don`t dispute Bjj or muay thai aren`t effective in the street. But there`s a big difference to their application in the street and in the octagon. So many people say "I`d take a boxer down" BUT you`ve got to get close to him before he hits you AND if you`re in a bar the ground is NOT good.

@idude001 I'm pretty sure you can telegraph a headkick or any unless you're anderson silva and throwing a front kick to the face. being a shorter fighter, when it comes to sparring the over right is good to close the distance but i usually step back afterwards and i expect a counter.

Chuck Liddell may be retired, but he had a great run in the UFC. This punch turned out the lights for more than a few people. Anyone who disses him and his technique, should step into the ring with him to prove that he's not doing it right.....good luck with that. Say what you want about a technique, but the real test is whether it works or not in practice. Have a look at the man's record, success speaks for itself.

I agree, I prefer using boxing. You go to a bar, some punk acts up and starts throwing bolos, weave, left hook, finish beer dont break a sweat and your a hero. Without a doubt boxers are the ones to watch in a fight. Bang, bang, BANG! And it`s all over. No take-downs, no arm locks, no kung fu ninja crane stances. The other group to watch out for are rugby players. They go to ground all day and stomp each other with metal studs in their boots! Fighting is not about fancy techniques and things that look good as a sport (MMA). If someone grabs you - spit in their face and finger-jab their eyes. Hardly going to train for that in the octagon, are you?

i meant in his proffessional career in the UFC, where EVERYONE can see. and of course u went and looked it up after i posted it up, but like i said, ground game is not his style, about 90% in the UFC have Blk belts and thats the way it should be cuz i believe ppl need to be talented in the UFC, a purple belt is only half way to getting a blk blt and it only takes about 3 years to get one. that says alot about someones ground game.

But it just happened to be the most powerful overhand punch in UFC history. It may be unorthodox and leave you open, but its a gamble. That is the whole point. You don't go for the overhand punch right off the bat, you throw a few short jabs and get the opponent off balance then throw the overhand. The whole point of the overhand is to go OVER the top of a person's guard and catch them off-guard. If you do this, it will knock them out almost every time. Unless they have an iron jaw.
@leokuan3676
15 жыл бұрын
agreed. I'm not saying he's all bad, he's kind of gifted, like having a really strong chin and the ability to take a hard beating. He could have been a great fighter had he not picked up those stupid unorthodox moves.Those moves worked for a while because others saw them as surprise attacks,now that everyone's seen it all, he's just as sloppy as a drunk in the ring. Any good out-boxers who are semi-quick on their feet can take him easily, unless chuck can magically land one of his lucky punches.
