In North Carolina we have a Monument law to protect the Confederate monuments. It passed in 2015. But the counts in the state will not uphold the law passed in 2015. We here in the NC Sons of Confederate veterans go to count and have our case throw out by the judges. They will not uphold the law we worked hard to get passed. It's frustrating.

We have a plaque explaining the "other view" on the Civil War at Fort Fisher next to a Confederate Monument in Kure Beach, NC (we use to have another plaque at the North Carolina State Capitol until the statue was taken down in 2020 :( )

I think the context or placement of CSA monuments is important because they can offend the sensibilities of people who are ancestors of former slaves or those that don't support the decision of states that approved of slavery to succeed from the union. I think they certainly have a place in museums or on the sites of civil war battlefields. But they become problematic when they are found in or near places like court houses, legislatures, schools, and public parks. These and similar locations should be neutral areas that welcome everyone and unfortunately, many of these monuments are often associated with the lost cause reaction to emancipation and reconstruction that included the KKK, lynching, Jim Crow laws, segregation, and the denial of civil rights. I think they have value as part of the historical record, but there is also an awareness of their social and political impact as well.

Thank you for your comment. In the last third of the episode here I talked about a suggestion that if you were like yourself made to help erect a monument in or near GETTYSBURG to commemorate the black Pennsylvanians who lost their freedom due to the confederate invasion. To help the sensibilities of ancestors of former slaves will you be assisting in helping to create such a monument?

Robert E. Lee was against slavery. He viewed it as a moral and political evil that should not be tolerated. There's no factual record of Lee's army committing atrocities against civilians. If there were it was punished with execution per Robert E. Lee.

Keep the monuments but alongside the monuments include copies of the CSA Constitution that enshrines slavery into that document, include a copy of the particular states declaration of secession, as well as a copy of Alexander Stephens Cornerstone Speech. While we’re at it, document the number of slaves that existed in the state where the monument stands.

The US Constitution permitted slavery also. Why are you singling out the CSA? I know that is the narrative being sold today. When the vast majority of CSA soldiers did not own any slaves how was it a war about slavery? How about the last 3rd of this episode are you going to do anything to help put up in or near Gettysburg to create a monument to Black Pennsylvania who lost freedom to invading Confederates?

Besides, most " slaves " were actually paid and owned property as well. Blacks owned blacks as well and it goes back long before it became " whiteys " fault. Slavery is even bigger today than it was then and that's fact.

@@civilwarreports5665 The United States Constitution doesn't mention "Slavery" once, not at all. Many of the founders in fact were committed to restricting it and stopping its spread. The CSA Constitution explicitly protects slavery for all time. If you don't see the difference between permitted and explicitly guaranteed, I can't help you. It also throws out the Declaration of Independence. Which Alex Stephens said was entirely wrong. Ya know, the document that says "All men are created equal" Or do you, like your rebel ancestors also believe that only applies to white people? Interesting to think about :) We should understand white Confederates on their own terms: firm believers in slavery and white supremacy. So much so, they were wiling to sacrifice almost 300k of their best men on its altar. They failed. That's their legacy.

@civilwarreports5665 Philadelphia was an end point of the Underground Railroad, and the Quaker State had a strong element in favor of abolition. The fact that confederates were capturing free black people shows that slavery was one of their core values even though most rebel troops weren't slave owners. It was like one society's army invading another and imposing its own will. Lincoln was a pragmatist, and his main goal was to preserve the union, but as far back as his 'House Divided' speech, he knew slavery had to go. It would be ideal if he could achieve both ends at the same time, so he declares the Emancipation Proclamation and allows the formation of black fighting units. The final nail in the coffin was the 13th Amendment, which outlaws enforced servitude unless it's incarceration after the commission of a crime. Unfortunately, this opened the door for all manor of abusive laws and consequences in the campaign to defeat Reconstruction.
